Governments Building

by Pieter11

One of the most remarkable buildings in the centre of Vaduz is the Governments Building that you can find at the end of Städtle and directly north from the church. The building was built between 1903 and 1905 and was designed in a Baroque style by the princely architect Gustav von Neumann. The building has an impressive front facade with a colourful roof, fresco's and an artistic balcony. The locals call the building the "Large Building".For its time the building was extremely modern: it was the first building with central heating, electric lightning and modern sanitary facilities. It was restored between 1984 and 1994 and it became a national monument in 1992. It has the parliaments room at the first floor where the parliament of only 25 members have their meetings.Too bad, to my opinion, they are building a modern building right in front of this Governments Building. This is an...

Mitteldorf

by Pieter11

The most beautiful part of Vaduz, to my opinion, is the area called Mitteldorf. This is the part where the capital originated in the 14th century, and the area still looks like those days.At soon as you enter the Hintergasse (the street that leads to Mitteldorf) you enter a complete different town than the one with concrete buildings, banks and modern art. Here you see cobblestone streets and alleys, vineyards, old buildings and low walls made of granite stones. The atmosphere in this area is very nice and peaceful: hardly any cars come here and companies and stores are nowhere to be found here. This combined with the beautiful blossoms and flowers that are everywhere around here makes it a brilliant little village on its own.The biggest attraction in Mitteldorf of course it the famous Red House, but there are much more monumental buildings here, and of course the vineyards are very nice...

The Red House

by Pieter11

One of the oldest buildings -an historical monument- of Liechtenstein, and definitely one of the nicest, is the Red House in the area of Mitteldorf. It is said to be built early in the 16th century, named "Vaistlihof" in those days. The oldest part of the building is the part that gives the house is name: a building with red walls and a very caracteristic stairs-facade at the westside of the house.Later a tower was added to the building too. This tower is called "Torkel" as is built of rough granite rocks topped with a wooden towerroom and a octogonal roof. The Red House is a nice building (although it is closed for public) but it wouldn't be half as great as it is now if it wasn't for the fantastic environment it is situated in: cobblestone streets leading towards it, vineyards beneath it and spectacular Alps right behind it.

SCHAAN

by Pieter11

The first village I crossed during my stay in Liechtenstein is the biggest "city" in the country, and no, it is not the capital. This biggest -let's make it- village is Schaan. It has about 6.000 inhabitants which is slightly more than the capital Vaduz.Schaan is one of the oldest settlements in the country, with the oldest parts dating from the Roman period. It was first mentioned on maps around 850 A.D. But compared to Vaduz, Schaan doesn't have a lot of interesting sights remaining. Today it is mainly the country's business and industial centre. The complete area between the village and the Rhine is full with factories and companies, and besides this you can also find a lot of other facilities here like the National Theatre and a lot of sport facilities.

Malbun village

by Pieter11

The tiny village of Malbun is nicely situated in the lowest part of the beginning of the Saminatal, high in the mountains of Liechtenstein. Different from Steg, the houses of Malbun are all built pretty close to each other, but still in a very open atmosphere. None of these houses have gardens around it, so you can walk between the houses anywhere you want, over the some green (in the summer at least) lawns covered by little yellow flowers. In the north of the village you will clearly see the Peace Chapel that was built here in 1950. This is the "church" of the village, and from there you look out over the whole village and all the mountains around. But Malbun's main-attraction is at the west-side of the village: The Malbun Ski Lift. This lift runs during the peak in the winter for the wintersporters, and in the summer peak for the numerous people that come here for hiking. Too bad: but...

Snow!!!

by Pieter11

Too bad I was in Malbun in April. This month is the first month that skiing and snowboarding is absolutely impossible. The highseason in Malbun in from December until February. In these months this is the sportive centre of the country, and you'll see wintersporters, young and old, everywhere. In April however, we were close to the only ones in the village and thé only ones on what used to be the pistes. Instead of snow, flowers were coming up everywhere, making it to one big colourful mountain. And fortunately, here and there, there still was some snow to be found. I couldn't stop myself from making a nice (right???) snowman and from skiing a leeeetle bit myself...

MALBUN

by Pieter11

Also a part of the municipality of Triesenberg is Malbun. It is a village that is situated at a height of 1620 metres above sealevel, high in the mountains of south-eastern Liechtenstein.Malbun is a village with two faces. The face I looked at was a village with only 50 inhabitants (maybe even less), a small and peacefully quiet collection of Alps-houses, and green mountains all around full of colourful flowers. But how different can a village be: in wintertime Malbun is the place to be for all Liechtensteiners that like wintersports as well as a lot of foreign tourists. Here you'll find dozens of kilometres of skiing- and snowboard pistes, skiing-schools, hotels, restaurants and all necessary facilities. But winter or summer: Malbun is a beautiful place to see, with snow in sight almost all year long and beautiful nature everywhere you look.

Saminatal

by Pieter11

The most beautiful area of Liechtenstein (not only my opinion) is the Saminatal (Samina Valley). This is a valley that was created by the Samina-river, one of the many sources of the Rhine-river.The valley is very special because of its very steep mountains at both sides: the Drei Schwestern massive and the Ziger massive. These mountains are all completely covered by tall trees and rare smaller plants and flowers. From most parts of the valley you can't even see the river that lies very deep in the middle of it.The Saminatal is a beloved place for recreation for the Liechtensteiners. It is a central point in many walking-, hiking- and mountainbike trails. Most of them are clearly indicated, but it is best to get yourself a touristmap from the Tourist Office in Vaduz if you want to undertake long walks or rides in this area.

View from Triesenberg

by Pieter11

When you are on your way to Triesenberg, or you just left the village, you should absolutely stop at the side of the road to enjoy the view of the valley from there. From the mountains in the surroundings of this village you can look out over the complete valley in which Vaduz is situated, over the Rhine-river and over Switzerland at the other side of the river.Just after you leave Triesenberg, you will see a parking at the left side of the road, full of trees that are cut. From there you have a great view. The trees you see here are used in the carpenter's factory at the other side of the road.

Steg's Map

by Pieter11

If you climb the mountains at the southside of the village, in the direction of "Sücka Gasthof", you will have a great view of the valley lying beneath you. It takes a tough climb (even by car it is hard work!) but the view you get is spectacular. All the way down in the Saminatal you can see the village of Steg. And what immediately surprises it the very special shape of the village. The whole of the village is built in a huge "8" shape. At the west of the mainroad the biggest circle of the 8 is situated: about 50 houses built in a circle around the central lawn. And at the other side of the road you see the second, smaller, circle that is ended by the Stegersee at the southside. The fact that the village looks like this is not a coincidence. This way the beauty of the valley is harmed as little as possible. The houses are just a fence around the central lawn, and are one with the nature...
