Drive to Malbun

by Anjutka

Most of Liechtenstein is mountains with steep almost inaccessible slopes. A nice panoramic drive is from Vaduz via Triesen up tothe small resort of Malbun which offers some nice skiing (prince Charles learned once to ski here in Malbun). From the road you can see the Rhine valley and look deeply into Graubünden.

Walk from the "city" of Vaduz to the castle

by Anjutka

A nice path with fine views leads from the centre of the capital Vaduz up to the Schloss (castle), the residence of the Fürst of Liechtenstein. The schloss itself is not open for tourists but the walk offers a lot of nice views over most of the country and nice Swiss mountains in the background.Along the paths are numerous information boards informing about Liechtenstein, its history and the rulers family etc., quite a lot of info but of course only a part of the full reality. The most positive of this nice country is the fact that it has no army since 140 years and there is no doubt that this is one of the sources of its great prosperity and can keep the taxes even of the very normal inhabitants very low. And the neighbours of Liechtestein, in particular Austria were not so peaceful under these last 140 years as they are today.

Going through Vaduz

by SLLiew

Vaduz is the capital of the principality of Liechtenstein. The population is slightly over 5,000 residents. So easy to drive around or just walk the streets of Vaduz within 30 minutes. Small valley alpine town.

Vaduz Castle

by robertgaz

Liechtenstein is a small, landlocked mountainous principality in central Europe. It is bordered to the west by Switzerland and by Austria to the east. Vaduz Castle is the most prominent landmark of the capital also called Vaduz. It is currently the residence for the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein.

Fuerstliche Gruft / Princely Vault

by globetrott

The Fuerstliche Gruft / Princely Vault is next to the cathedral St.Florin and unfortunately you may just see it from outside. There you may first see several arches and when you get closer you may at least see a great entrance-gate, decorated with a scene of the holy Bible and the princely coat of arms on top. That gate was made by the italian Carmelo Puzzolo in 1992 and shows the awakening of Lazarus.

St.Florin cathedral in Vaduz

by globetrott

St.Florin cathedral looks great already from outside. Take a look inside as well, you may see a rather simple gothic church and a nice altar with woodcarvings. The most beautiful detail is in my opinion the princely balcony and the great organ.Don't miss the princely vault / Fuerstliche Gruft next to St.Florin cathedral !!Church-service is each sunday at 09.30a.m.and it will also be broadcasted on TV at the local station !

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein

by globetrott

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is another very interesting museum in the centre of Vaduz. Most of the exhibits there are quite modern, while the most precious works of art of older centuries are mostly shown in the "Gallerie im palais Liechtenstein" in Vienna. In summer 2005 the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein had a special exhibition called "Faites vos Jeux", about games and modern art... ...not my cup of tea...Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is openTuesday - Sunday 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m.every thursday the museum closes at 08.00p.m.The entrance-fee is 8 sfr / 6 EurosHolders of "Erlebnispass Liechtenstein" get a free entry !

Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum in Vaduz

by globetrott

The Landesmuseum of Liechtenstein will show you mainly exhibits about the long history and the interesting nature of Liechtenstein. Besides this there are also various changing exhibitions - take a look at their web-page below !Hundreds of years ago the Fuerst of Liechtenstein got certain priviledges by the Austrian court and because of the special place of the county these priviledges remained unchanged untill nowadays. The borderline between Austria and Liechtenstein is high above Vaduz in the almost un-reachable mountains, without any connecting road. The Liechtensteiner Landesmuseum in Vaduz is opendaily except monday 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m.every Wednesday it is even open untill 08.00p.m.The entrance-fee is 8sfrholders of the "Erlebnispass Liechtenstein" have free entry !

Vaduz - the governement-building

by globetrott

The interior of the governement-building in Vaduz is off limits for tourists, BUT it looks really great from outside with lovely decorations and ornaments in the facade. Liechtenstein is just a tiny country with 160 km2 and 33.000 inhabitants living in one of the 11 small villages around Vaduz. Austrian and Swiss officers are in charge of the customs-formalities, the currency is the Swiss Franc and Liechtenstein is part of the EWR-treaty.The Fuerst is the head of the state and he is also Austrian citizen with a castle south of Vienna and a palais in the centre of Vienna. Palais Liechtenstein in Vienna looks a lot more impressive than the castle or any other government-building in Vaduz

Vaduz - the townhall

by globetrott

The townhall in Vaduz is one of the buildings with the most interesting facade in Vaduz. It looks almost like an old castle with the wooden covers next to the windows, BUT in fact the townhall was just built in 1932 and decorated with frescos by Johannes Troyer. I think it is one of the most beautiful buildings in Vaduz anyway and a lot more interesting than all of the other modern architecture without any kind of phantasy shown in the facades.Walk around the townhall, some of the best decorations are at the backside !!
