To Vaduz by bus

As Vaduz does neither have an airport nor a train station the only way to get there by public transport is the bus. The Liechtenstein Bus company runs regular services to all towns and villages in Liechtenstein, to Feldkirch in Austria and to Sargans and Buchs in Switzerland. We arrived to Vaduz from Sargans in Switzerland which has frequent rail connections towards Zurich or Chur. We also used the bus to get to Feldkirch in Austria.Bus tickets are available from the driver. Some Swiss railpasses are valid on the Liechtenstein buses as well.

From Vaduz to Munich by train

Well, it's not easy - it will take about 4~5 hours.You can go to from Vaduz to Buchs SG or Feldkirch (Austria) and then take a train to Innsbruck; from Innsbruck, there are direct trains to Munich (I did that, not from Vaduz but from Chur, and "divided" in 2 days - Chur/Innsbruck; Innsbruck/Garmisch, Garmisch/Munich).Another option is to go from Buchs or Feldkirch to Lindau (Germany), and then to Munich.The best way to find all the connections is Deutsche Bahn site:http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?And have in mind that Vaduz itself doesn't have a train station. You take the yellow bus to Buchs SG or to Feldkirch

If you prefer to save your money for something else than a taxi I can recommend you to take a bus instead. There are quite many bus lines in Vaduz, going to the different, even smaller, villages around in the mountains. A ticket cost about 1 euro, and you can buy the ticket onboard. Just make sure to take the right bus, as there are many lines stopping at the same bus stop in the city, but then goes on many different routes.

Taxi in Liechtenstein is fairly cheap, and as the little country is just little, it never really goes expensive no matter where you want to go. The only problem is that there aren't too many taxis, which we realised after having the same taxi driver three times during two days. But just ask the hotel staff to call a cab for you, and it will be there five minutes later.The taxi station in town is next to a big parking garage. Normally there is no taxi there, but inside the garage there is a phone in the wall, that you use to call for a taxi. Quite funny. And it won't take long until it's there.

Liechtenstein's capital Vaduz must be the only capital in Europe (not too sure about Andorra though?) that doesn't have an airport, or a trainstation? In fact, there isn't an airport or trainstation in the whole country!?Not too strange one can say though, as Liechtenstein is one of Europe's five micro states, but to get there you'll have to take buses from either Switzerland, Germany or Austria.We arrived here from Zürich, from where we first took a train to Sargans (make sure to get a seat on the left side of the train, as the view of Lake Zürich is fantastic!), and from there a bus for another 20-30 minutes. It's the same also if you come from one of the other two countries from where you can reach the little kingdom.The bus will stop in the central parts of the very little town, from where you will have no problem to find your way around.

Explore Vaduz on foot

With only about 5200 inhabitants Vaduz is one of the smallest capitals in the world. It can be best explored on foot. Also the neigbouring town Schaan is still in walking distance from Vaduz. If you are tired of walking then you can still take a bus which runs along the main street.

Although there is a train station in nearby Schaan, the options are very limited from there. It is far better to take a bus from Sargans or Buchs in Switzerland, or perhaps from Feldkirch in Austria. The Switzerland buses are ajacent to the train stations and run very frequently through Vaduz and the lower valley. I found there was ample room for my suitcase. The Swiss Pass also covers the Liechtenstein bus routes. There are signs indicated which buses serve Liechtenstein. The ride in to Vaduz is scenic, so it may be nice to sit by the window. From Zurich, it is best to take a train to Sargans direct and then make the single bus connection to Vaduz. Coming from the Bodensee or St. Gallen, Buchs would be the likely entry point.

The Liechtenstein Bus is very easy to use with friendly drivers. The system connects most points in the country with each other, as well as the towns of Buchs and Sargans, Switzerland, as well a Feldkirch, Austria, all three being decent transportation hubs to other points to Europe. If you plan on using the bus for more than one trip or reasonable length, buy the tageskarte (day pass) as it turns out to be a better value (7 CHF, vs. 2-5CHF each way)

If flying to Zurich, you can take the train for the 1 1/2 hour trip to the Swiss town of Sargans, near the Liechtenstein border. In Sargans, connections are excellent with the Swiss Postal Bus System, which serves all communities in Liechtenstein.There are no border formalities between the two countries, and Liechtenstein uses Swiss currency.Within the principality do traveling via postal bus. By presenting your Swiss Pass if non European passport holder (obtained in your own country), you are able to purchase a special ticket for unlimited bus travel throughout the country. Montafonerbahn - No quicker than the bus

The Montafonerbahn is a privately owned railway, running for some 12.7 km between Bludenz and Schruns and which stops, along the wait at Schaan-Vaduz - the only train station in Liechtenstein. From there you have to take the bus from the nearby post office in order to get to the centre of Vaduz. InterCity trains will probably only stop at Buchs - you tend to go through Liechtenstein without realising it - other than having received an sms if your phone roams! Feldkirch-Schaan is 16km and costs a normal ÖBB or Vorarlberg VOR tariff.
