When to go

by ginte

Summer and spring (May through September) are far and away the best times of year to travel in Lithuania. The majority of foreign tourists come during July and August, when low-budget hotels and hostels can be fully booked. While there's usually a picturesque sprinkling of snow on the ground in winter (November through March), there's also only a few hours of daylight each day.

Lithuanian countryside

by Niekie

Go out and explore Lithuania’s beautiful countryside. You will find fertile, rolling hills, with wheat and barley flowing in the wind, and fields of wild flowers with the occasional cow feeding on grass and clover. Strewn between great forests and the fertile hills lay small lakes and ponds for cattle and birds to drink from, and farmhouses are built next to them. We found the countryside to be one of the most attractive features of Lithuania; the pictures we took from a moving car really don’t do it justice. I think it is one of few places left in Europe where life still seems to be much as it has been for the last ages, unspoiled by the corruptions of the modern world. But it isn’t all Teletubby country; people have to struggle and work hard to make a decent living here.Although we may think of Lithuania’s countryside as being picturesque and unspoiled, the people living and working in...

Neringa National Park

by Niekie

Legend has it that the benevolent sea goddess Neringa loved the Curonian fishermen so much that, in order to keep them safe, she built a wall for them, far out of the coast, to protect them from the treacherous waters of the Baltic Sea. She personally carried the sand in her apron to build a seemingly endless ridge of dunes, and the fishermen, feeling indebted to this great deed named the land after she who created it: Neringa. The Curonian Spit, Kuršių Nerija or Neringa, is a very long and narrow peninsula stretching from the Russian enclave Kaliningrad to the port city of Klaipeda in Lithuania. It is 97 kilometers long and never more than four kilometers wide. After the last ice age, wind, wave, current and sand collided between the Baltic Sea and the delta of the great river Numenas, forming a ridge of dunes that nearly cuts off the Curonian Lagoon from the open sea. Only a narrow...

The Musts

by lotharlerch

The musts are the wonderful natural landscape of the lake district of the Aukstaitija National Park (partly surrounding the nuclear power plant of Ignalina - of Chernobyl type), the outstanding but in its present shape man made landscape of the Couronian Spit, the two interesting and colourful towns of Vilnius and Kaunas. And not to forget Trakai castle, a very fine reconstruction in a wonderful natural setting with splendid lakes around it. And last but not least the extraordinary open air ethnographic museum near Rumsiskés, one of the best if not the best one in Europe. There are not only old farmhouses etc. collected from all over the country but even the ancient forms of agriculture - with all the traditional animals (special horses and cows etc.) and the traditiional crops are presented here. I strongly recommend it but I also had an experience of an other sort there - see further...

Where's the mosquitoes?

by RB_Oakes

When I got to Sweden, I noticed mosquitoes for the first time on the trip. Which makes me ask - with all the marshes in northern Lithuania, why were there no mosquitoes? I hate mosquitoes, so that just adds to the charm of this lovely country. I don't know quite how it works that there aren't mosquitoes there, but I really appreciated it.

Cranes

by RB_Oakes

In the north, they are everywhere. These beautiful birds nest in high, towering places (like chimneys, unfortunately) and wander the fields, poking their heads at tiny frogs in the ground. Graceful and powerful, I am a big fans of cranes now that I've seen so many in action.

Land of the vast fields

by Leipzig

When we arrived Lithuania from the Polish border the first thing we saw were fields - endless yellow wheat fields as far as your eyes can see. Farmland covers roughly 54 percent of the total area of Lithuania, with arable land and grassland accounting for 73 and 11 percent respectively.

Woods

by DanielF

Where does all that wood come from?Unlike what is generally thought, woods does not cover the majority of the Lithuanian surface. It is in fact a very agricultural country. However, the exploitation of woods, which is also a form of agriculture, has been traditionaly one of the most important economic activities in Lithuania. Forests provide enough wood for the domestic consum and for the export markets. And, of course, forests mirroring in lakes are the first image that comes to your mind when you think of Lithuania.
