by DanielF

Although modern amenities and industrialisation have arrived to many areas of the country, there are regions where the villages have preserved their original fisonomy of scattered fams and wooden cottages. These areas will be delightful for the lovers of pastoral scenes like this one.

Wooden cottages

by DanielF

traditional architecture in Lithuania also employs wood as the main construction material. The homes look comfortable and cozy and are usually painted in bright colours. This kind of architecture, however, can only be found in rural areas.

Wooden suns

by DanielF

Ancient Lithuanians worshiped the sun among other deities. Even after they became Christians they have gone on depicting suns incorporated to the sign of the cross. The sun is, in fact, one of the symbols of the country.

Wooden totems

by DanielF

It is said that Lithuania was the last European country to embrace Christianism. Even today some relict elements of the former pagan beliefs can be observed in Lithuanian everyday life. One of them is the presence of many wooden totems that protect homes and even entire communities.

Wooden churches

by DanielF

Wooden churches are still plentyful in rural Lithuania. Some of them are quiet old, even from the XVIII century. Their structure is very simple: usually a single naved building with an exent belltower, which is the most appealing element. This is a picture of the famous wooden belltower of the church in Paluse, Eastern Lithuania.

Do Research before coming to any country.

by Grazina

Before coming I did 2 years of research, and found it did me some good to know a little of this country before entering. To my surprise I knew more about this country then Irma. Now I have to admit that Grazina knew more then I, but it pays to know a little, just in case you go on your own, and you don't have a Lithuanian tour guide or friends in the country to show you around. The warmth of the people and the food.

Two lines are at this time open - Panevežys-Anykšèiai and Anykšèšai-Rubikiai.

National Lithuanian Anthem And Flag

by giedre

In 1898, when the tenth anniversary of Varpas magazine, the herald of ideas of independence during the tsarist regime, drew nearer, one of the leaders of the national movement, the writer Vincas Kudirka, wrote a poem called the National Song - Tautinë giesmë and set it to music. It was published for the first time in 1898, and first publicity performed in Vilnius in 1905. In 1918 Tautinë giesmë officially became the national anthem of the Republic of Lithuania. During the years of Soviet occupation it was forbidden to play it.National Anthem of Lithuaniaby Vincas KurdikaLithuania, my homeland, land of heroes!Let your sons draw strength from the past.Let your chidren follow only the path of virtue, working for the good of their native land and for all mankind.
