The Lithuanian countryside is a paradise of unspoilt forests and fairytale lakes, also the coastline of white sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets are wonderful places to relax and recharge your energies.

There're 3 cities in...

by vysnaite

There're 3 cities in Lithuanian having Old towns, actually 7, but three biggest ones: Vilnius (the capital), Kaunas (the second biggest city), Klaipeda (third by size, seaport city) - all of them are not to be missed, as well as Nida, Palanga and Trakai (near Vilnius the castle in the picture). Near Siauliai - you'll find The famous hill of crosses (check Siauliai page). 35 km from Vilnius - Trakai. Take a look at the Travelogue. A region deserves another age about it with amazing lakes and recreation places, but for a short visit - Trakai town, which used to be capital of Lithuania and the castle. the city itself is interesting in one more aspect - in this town from a long time (14-15th century) karaims and Tatars (tiurk nationalities) have been living and they live there till now, you can see this in the style of the houses, the base of the house above the ground part of it is in...

find the roots of NAME OF...

by Redule

find the roots of NAME OF LITHUANIA Lithuania in Lithuanian language sounds like Lietuva. From the first sight the name associates with the words “the rain” and “to pour” (lietus and lieti). It really rains often in Lithuania, so Lithuania is called a land of rivers and lakes. But there are guesses that the roots of the name are in warrior forces, soldiery, wedding escort and etc.

find out what Lithuania is...

by Redule

find out what Lithuania is (HISTORY of XX century) The second Soviet occupation lasted from 1944 to 1990. Resistance against the second Soviet occupation was especially persistent from 1944-54. During the war and following it, Lithuania lost almost a third of its inhabitants. Many were exiled to Siberia, while others escaped to the West. No Lithuanian family was left untouched by these tragedies. However, freedom remained a secret hope of Lithuanians and on March 11, 1990 Lithuania once again regained its status as an independent republic.

find out what Lithuania was (ANSCIENT HISTORY) WHY EUROPE SHOULD BE THANKFUL TO LITHUANIA? In 14th and 15th centuries, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) played an important role in European history . The western expansion of the Tatars was halted by Lithuanian forces, and thus Europe was spared invasions from the east. The GDL also defeated the Order of the Cross, putting an end to 200 years of fierce warfare between the two powers, and to the Order's expansion into Eastern Europe.Do not laugh, we were not so small. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania stretched from the Baltic to the Black seas; it was one of the largest European states of that time.

Buy 'Vilnius in your pocket'....

Buy 'Vilnius in your pocket'. It contains everything you need to know and more than everyone could tell you. You find it everywhere in the airport, in the shops, bookstores, IKKI malls, etc. If you travel in the country you have also Klaipeda in your pocket and Kaunas in your pocket. I will leave soon, and I will miss the people, never saw such kind people and open minds (and pretty girls). Hospitality is a value here.

I found The Bradt Travel Guide to Lithuania to be a very useful source of information. The third edition has recently been published (February 2002). The ISBN no. is 1 84162 049 1. It retails at £12.95 in the UK and at $18.95 in the US.

Daivute's General Tip

What I miss the most when I'm away from Lithuania is my home. I know I live now in a different country, but Lithuania will always be my home. I miss the lifestyle, 'slow' food-the best food in the whole world! I miss those beautiful countrysides and warm Lithuanian people. Every little thing about Lithuania is so special, especially the holydays and their traditions.
