The Old city of Viliuns is a beautiful area of the city with lots of narrow lanes and no-end streets, you can walk around this maze of old buildings and historical monuments for hours, it's beautiful and quiet ... Try to find your own favourite spot in there because there are so many interesting things around ! The country-side , when we drove from city to city we used to stop and walk around the country side admiring the beauty . We visited a few villages and the people who met us were very nice , some even guided us as we were walking around !

Visit the sand dunes in Klaipeda/Nida.If you're into pilgrimmages and such, goto Siauliai to visit the Hill of Crosses. For myself, I visited Siauliai on my way to Riga, Latvia. It was a simple hop off the bus - catch a taxi to and from - hop back on a bus to Riga The photo is of me in Nida on the sand dunes

Visit West Coast, sandy beaches and beach towns: Klaipeda, Palanga, Nida. And enjoy the Night Life! It's nice Sea Park on Neringa Peninsula, over the harbor from Klaipeda You can see Dolphin Show and some sea animals... Sand Dunes on Neringa Peninsula, extremely big like desert, but visit with care, it-s nature reservate and there are only some places where allowed to go onto the Dunes.

do not beleive what others say!! as - a lot of people do not have any knowledge of Lithuania is! It is best if you know someone who can guide you a bit, this helps as you can see more interesting places. When you are in Lithuania - make sure that you have enough cash(not too much!) as you never know where they don't accept credit cards although they have a sticker showing that cards are accepted; to take warm clothes and rain jacket:)) Only one little problem that you don't find a lot of English speaking, may be students but otherwise is good to know at least something in Lithuanian. Even shops, food in the supermarkets are in Lithuanian. The people are not that friendly if they don't know you, looked like they are afraid of foreigners. I loved this place!!!! There are a lot of beautiful places to see - Vilnius, Kaunas, Nida, Palanga, Klaipeda,Trakai, Sauliai, Hill of witches.... and...

Beautiful as Kaunas and...

by vilkas

Beautiful as Kaunas and Vilnius (and parts of Klaipeda) are, you absolutely must visit the Lithuanian countryside and the Baltic coast, preferably - strange as it sounds - in the winter, when the western tourists flee and the stark beauty of the landscape comes into focus. Somehow the country seems more 'genuine' in winter. There are many, particularly time spent with a family of poor farmers in the countryside during winter (wonderful people they were!), walks through snow-bedecked, silent pine forests; sunset on the dunes of Nida on a bitterly-cold December evening; picking mushrooms in a forest outside Kaunas in early summer; tours of some of the beautiful countryside churches . . . the list goes on and on.

Keep your eye on Post offices and places that sell cards if you are wanting to send them. I didn't find any post offices in Lithuania, and mail boxes were pretty rare... don't know why. Or maybe my eyes just didn't catch the PO:s :} Cheap coke, yeah... tasted lemon coke first time in my life, you can't buy it in Finland.

Ya gotta go to the Kryziu Kalnas! It's so pretty and there's so many crosses. It takes your breath away! Bring a cross or else you'll feel left out of all the history and holiness!! Everyone is so kind and hospitable, it's amazing. The grandmothers give you far too much too eat, but it's much better than having too little. I had a great time at all the homes we visited.

What do you expect? Maybe green lake near Vilnius. Really green, this is the colour of the water. According to one story you can find treasure deep inside. Once upon a time, the lake was frozen over and two armies waged any battle. The ice has melted and all sinked to the bottom.

by polinia

Trakai is situated just 25 km from Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Old town of Trakai has a lot of monuments, national park has lakes with many small islands, forests with wild animals, villages with historical farm buildings. And of course, Trakai castle, impressive building in the middle of the lake. Being there you will find yourself in the remoted past and not quite willing to come back.
