    Kaunas
    by Raimix
I like Kaunas of more Lithuanian spirit, more gothic architecture, lot of interesting and worth to see museums and proactive cultural life of this beautiful place.

Many nice people, smiling, talking, it seems they live an active lifes and, what is more, lot of wedings have been at Kaunas Town Hall and in some churches when I was there.

Somethink like procesion was going on in Kaunas I had took a photo of it.

    Statue of the man

When wandering around Kaunas you will discover quite a few statues.

After Lithuania's independence in 1990 all communist related statues have been moved to Grutas Park which is a sort of sculpture park for tourists.

Information about the Monument to Vytautas the Great and the Monument to Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas can be found in seperate tips.

Other important statues include the following ones:

The naked figure of A Man is the work of sculptor Petras Mazuras and has been erected in 1991. It can be found outside the Mykolas Zilinskas Art Museum.

The Monument to Antanas Smetona was installed in 1996 and is located near Vilniaus gatve 33. He was the first President of Lithuania (1919-1920).

The Monument to Motiejus Valancius can be found near the Church of the Holy Trinity. He was a well known bishop and died in 1875 in Kaunas.

Kaunas is situated at the confluence of Lithuania's two longest rivers: the Nemunas and the Neris.

Both rivers arise in Belarus and in Kaunas the Neris becomes a tributary of the Nemunas river. The Nemunas flows into the Curonian lagoon and then into the Baltic Sea.

The region where the two rivers meet is said to be the point where Kaunas originated in the 14th century.

Some buildings and bridges are beautifully illuminated at night.

I especially liked the blue and red illumination of the Aleksoto bridge (Aleksoto tiltas) which spans the river Nemunas just south of Kaunas' city centre.

Other buildings well worth a visit at night are the Church of St. Gertrude and the red brick Vytautas Church

In the end of Laisves Aleja you can see St Michael Archangel Church. The church was built in 1891-1895 and was Orthodox Cathedral of St Peter and Pavel. The cathedral was a parish church for Kaunas garrison of Russian Empire Army. In 1919 the church became catholic with St Michael Archangel name, in 1940 In Soviet times the church was closed and it was museum. In 1991 the church was open as catholic and a parish church of Lithuanian Army in Kaunas.

The church of Sts Peter and Paul was been built in 1408-1413, although then building works were had been going on and were finished in 1624. The church was strongly damaged in wars and fires, for example, after great fire of the roof in 1732 only one tower was rebuilt. In 1895 the church got name Cathedral and in 1921 Basilica. In USSR times the cathedral was closed and the interesting fact that the museum of atheism was organised inside :-). Since 1990 the cathedral was reopened.

  • Perkunas House - Kaunas
    Perkunas House
    by bugulma
The most original gothic house in Kaunas (guidebook says that it is most original in all Lithuania), was built in the late XV century. In XVI century the house was sold to Jesuits who built a chapel here in 1643. In XIX century the house was restorated and used as museum and theater and was named as Perkunas' House (Perkunas is baltic nations' God of thunder). The house is situated not far from Ratusa Square, on Aleksoto Street.

    Vilniaus Street

Vilniaus Street is full of old houses and churches and I think if there were no people and shops then you feel in medivial town somewhere. The street is begun in Ratusa Square and goes along the old town to the East. Then the street flows to Laisves Aleja, with St Michael Archangel Church in the end.

There are several internet cafes just off Laisves square if you look carefully. I always used the one on the main drag in Old Town which is an acutal café. The only drawbacks are the small screens and that smoking is allowed.

    It's on Vilniaus 24, Tel. 40 74 27
