Svyturys beer by HORSCHECK Svyturys is a popular beer brand in Lithuania. The brewery is located in Klaipeda and was established in 1784. They produce various sorts of beer like wheat beer (Baltas), dark beer (Baltijos) and of course lager beer (Ekstra). Nowadays Svyturys is owned by Baltic Beverages Holding which is controlled by the Carlsberg breweries. On my trip through Lithuania I tried a few Lithuanian beers and I must admit that Svyturys Ekstra was among my favourites. Leave a Comment

Although Lithuania joined the European Union (EU) on the 1st of May 2004, they don't have the Euro as currency. Lithuania's currency is still the Litas. 1 Litas is divided into 100 Centai. The 10 Litas note shows the two pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas and their airplane "Lithuanica" whose wreckage can be seen in the War Museum (Vytauto Didziojo Muziejus). For the full story, please see separate tips under "Things to do" and "Off the beaten path". Leave a Comment

Hired wedding limousine by HORSCHECK When wandering around Kaunas on a summer weekend you will probably see quite a few young couples getting married in one of the lovely churches or the Town Hall (Rotuse). We saw at least 4 weddings on a Saturday in August 2006. It looks like it is quite popular to hire a fancy limousine or a horse carriage for this event. Leave a Comment

There always has been some kind of "competition" between Kaunas and Vilnius. Most of people living in Vilnius don't say any good thing about Kaunas. Most people living in Kaunas don't say some good words about Vilnius because of that. And "Kaunas is Kaunas" is the most common phrase here, what means that Kaunas is the best:) Leave a Comment

Kaunas is suffering "the second city syndrome" as I say, so nobody in Kaunas likes Vilnius people and anything related to Vilnius and vice versa. It's not the rule, but usually you won't get many friends if you go around declaring your love to Vilnius:) And at night in some bar with drunk Kaunas people you even can get punched on your nose because of that! Red tulips by satara Kaunas has many festivals in spring time and during such festivals like "Kaunas jazz" or Kaunas birthday "Kaunas days" don't be surprised to receive some flowers from festival organizing people in the streets. One Swiss girl approached me with this question when she received a tulip from someone in Laisves avenue. She said that was very cute tradition:) Ah, by the way - if you want to give some flowers to your Lithuanian friends or colleagues, don't give them an even number of flowers (like 6, 8, 12 etc.) because that's not appropriate. In Lithuania people bring an even number of flowers only for deceased people. I was a bit frustrated at first when in the USA I received a dozen of roses, but seems they can't count in another way - it's dozen or half dozen and no other way ..:) Leave a Comment

A DAY BEFORE ELECTION TO EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT by matcrazy1 I was in Kaunas just before the election to the European Parliament (13th June 2004), the first in which Lithuanians took part just after joining European Union on 1 May 2004. No wonder that I could see many election posters, flags etc., like on my picture, both in Kaunas and in other cities and towns throughout Lithuania. Lithuanians elected 13 of 732 members of European Parliament and with the turnout of 48.2% they were more politicaly active than say Polish people with only 20.42%. Well, Lithuanians were the most enthusiastic for European Union among 15 new EU members - over 91% of them voted for joining EU, in city of Kaunas the most in Lithuania, almost 95% - results here. Is Lithuania a country of euroenthusiasts? Is Kaunas the most euroenthusiastic city in Europe? We will see... in a few years... Leave a Comment

CLOSED AND MONITORED :-) by matcrazy1 Most small businesses like restaurants, stores/shops were equipped with street cameras, alarms and heavy wooden doors, like on my picture. Add gratings at windows on the ground floor of many houses. Was it casual anti-theft protection or a sign of very high risk of burglary in Kaunas? Well, I felt in Kaunas as safe as in, say Berlin, Wien or Krakow :-). Leave a Comment

LEAVE YOUR SHOES HERE, PLEASE by matcrazy1 When we entered little mosque in Kaunas we were asked to take our shoes off and to leave them at these shelves, on my picture, placed in a vestibule. Well, it was rather not Kaunas local costume but muslim mosque's custom. But not exclusively, whenever you visit any local at home or apartment take your shoes off when you enter even if you are not asked to do it. Mostly slippers will be offered for you or... you - as a special guest - will be allowed to enter with shoes on. Leave a Comment

GRAFFITI ON FENCES by matcrazy1 I found a few old, wooden or brick and neglected fences around yards of local, old apartments buildings. Most of them were luckily painted, like on my picture, in form of colorful graffiti. Well, there were no unpleasant (I mean rude words or so) graffiti in the part of Kaunas I visited (centre/downtown), or I didn't find any. Leave a Comment
