    The 25 m high obelisk commemorates the flight of Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas in 1933.

    With their plane "Lituanica" they tried to set a world record for the longest non-stop transatlantic flight. They started in New York and their goal was Kaunas, but they crashed somewhere on German territory (nowadays Poland).

    The two national heroes are even pictured on the 10 Litas note.

    The monument weighs about 3 tons and was erected in the 1990's about 60 years after the death of the two pilots.

    Directions:
    The Monument to Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas is situated on top of the street Parodos gatve just in the neighbourhood of the S. Dariaus ir S. Gireno Stadium.

    Most tourists visit City Hall and Kaunas Castle. But they often miss an object that lies just between those two. I mean Kaunas Seminary complex and st.George church. From the City Hall square you can see just a building behind a gate and st. Trinity church. But the most beautiful view you can get from the back yard.
    When you go from City Hall to Kaunas Castle choose A.Jaksto str. and take a turn to a Papilio str. You can see the back yard of Seminary and Bishop Palace if you are standing next to st.George church. The church was famous for its paintings. But unfortunally during Soviet occupation it was used as a storehouse. Some chemical and medicine goods were kept there and they ruined the paintings and wood curvings. But it still can be seen from the remains how beautiful they were.
    Don't miss the place!

    Kaunas center is situated in the place surrounded by hills, so to climb them usually is necessary some machine help. That's there the oldest and the only two left in the Baltic states funiculars are used for! Only 0.5 Lt and you are on the top of the hill (Aleksotas region) where all Kaunas can be overlooked..

    I must admit, I went today on purpose to Vytautas park near amusement park for kids - I heard there are some dances for senior citizens arranged.. And yeah!! I found them!! Ah.. what a lovely look. Grandmothers and grandfathers dancing, chatting, having a stroll.. and keeping their hands.. Ah.. I just hope when I get old I will have someone to hold my hand like this...

    "Dainu slenis" is a valley where many songs' and dances' festivals take place.. Every summer there is a festival of Lithuanian songs and by that time this valley is full of people and musicians (and of course street vendors). But the rest of the time it's empty and these steep stairs are used by university students who come here to do some sports and train a bit while running up and down.. Believe me, it's quite exhausting. I did that myself 4 years ago when I had to attend university sports classes...:)

    I live in Kaunas already for 5 years and I've never seen this little red medieval church in the old town, so the other day when i took a shortcut and found this old but still open for people and masses church, i was astonished;) Especially i like the colour of the sky here..

    didn't you know it? Well, no wonder. Not so many people take this little old amusement park as a thing to mention, but it's still working and kids love it. It's not big, just couple of carousels, some car racing tracks for kids and so on. And it's situated in the green park on the Parodos ("Exhibition") hill from which you can see all Kaunas center-downtown. During summer time some travelling amusement parks from Czech Republic, Holland and other places comes to Kaunas as well.

    Kaunas "Azuolynas" or the Oak park is in the middle of Kaunas and the biggest green area in the city. It rather looks like little forest but with comfortable walking, jogging and cycling roads. Loved by moms' with babies and sportsmen also by old people who enjoy sitting on the benches and catching sun rays by doing a small gossiping..:)

    Early baroque monastery stays near the Kursiu lagoon. Ensembe formed from 20 buildings: church, monastery, houses of monks and more. It was created in 1664-1730 with help of Italian architects.

    Interior is different in different parts of monastery. I very liked a wooden carvings in one housing.

    Every time I go to the Old town of Kaunas I notice that strange house with two arcs.. My imagination is trying to create some explanation of them.. or maybe some story of ancient times about these arcs and secret doors for kings and queens..:))
