Kaunas Restaurants

It was upclass and rather large restaurant arranged in good old style inside beautiful brick cellars from 17th century. This place, on my picture, was cigar hall. Well, smoking was allowed at the tables as well.

HOURS
Sat - Thu: 11.00 am - 12.00 pm,
Fri - Sat: 11.00 am - 2.00 am.

Favorite Dish: Svyturys (my recommendation) and Utenos beer. There was good choice of French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and American wines.

They served different food from local to international (French, Italian) cuisine. Prices varied from, say 3.50 - 6.50 Lt for a soup to over 30.00 Lt for the most expensive meat dishes, rather expensive as for Lithuania. I enjoyed my company (matcrazy0 :-), Svyturys beer and live music there. More in my nightlife tips.

Our waiter could speak English. He was serious and fast. They accepted credit cards at least of Visa and Eurocard/Mastercard system.

Favorite Dish: Excuse, I didn't eat there but I enjoyed the place, music live and Svyturys (my recommendation) and Utenos beer. There was good choice of French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and American wines.

Avilio terasa restaurant offered a few different desserts including:
1. Warm cake of curd with strawberries sauce - 5.00 Lt,
2. beer ice-cream - 6.00 Lt,
3. strawberries cake with strawberries in ourselves juice - 6.00 lt,
4. flaky dessert "mosaic" - orange jelly, grapes jelly, whipped cream, ice-cream, preserved pineapples, preserved peaches, strawberries sauce - 7.00 lt.
Add various ice-creams.

Favorite Dish: I ordered blackberries cake with blackberries in ourselves juice for 6.00 Lt (€ 1.81 ;US$ 2.55; 8.40 Polish zl) and it tasted yummy. It's my recommendation :-).

Whenever you are in Lithuania, do not skip delicious Lithuanian crepes. I fell in love to them in first visited Lithuanian town that was Kedainiai and those served in Kaunas tasted great. They were more expensive as well.

Favorite Dish: Urszula ordered crepes with chicken and sauce of mushrooms for 7.00 Lt (€ 2.11 ;US$ 2.55; 9.80 Polish zl) and they tasted good. It's my recommendation :-) although I preferred sweet crepes with fruits and sauce of berries.

The restaurant, located out-door but roofed, offered Lithuanian crepes (krepai) with:
1. vegetables and sauce of broccoli - 6.00 Lt,
2. fruits and sauce of berries - 7.00 Lt,
3. cheese - 7.00 Lt,
4. chicken and sauce of mushrooms - 7.00 lt,
5. salmon and red caviar - 17.00 lt.
Salmon and caviar, as I noticed, was always expensive in Lithuania and not only there :-(. Anyway, I think that Lithuanian crepes is a must to taste in Lithuania.

This was two in one: a restaurant (with limited choice of food) and a bar which served limited choice of beer, wine and other drinks.

Except of local beer Avilys they served:
- juice and ice-cream coctail (6.00 Lt),
- milk shakes (strawberries, peaches, vanilla - 7.00 Lt),
- Martini (rosso or bianco - 7.00 Lt for 100 ml),
- a few kinds of French wines (7.00 Lt for 150 ml or 50-60 Lt for a bottle),
- hot wine (5.00 Lt for 150 ml),
- hot beer grog (8.00 Lt for 0.5 l or 4.00 Lt for 250 ml).

Favorite Dish: We ordered two Avilys beers brewed in mini-brewery located in cellars of nearby Avilys restaurant (Vilniaus gatve 34):

1. Avilio alaus (Avilys light beer) - 5.00 Lt (€ 1.5; US$ 1.83; 7.00 Polish zl) for 500 ml or 2.50 lt for 250 ml
My opinion: malt-accented pale lager clean and easy to drink in quantity :-). Sweetish aroma and taste with honey and almond notes. Very different (that's why it's a must) although not my favourite.

2. Medaus alus (Avilys honey beer) - 0.5 lt more expensive than the above.
My opinion: Avilys Avilio brewed with honey, industrial-grade honey note, not my favourite.

It was getting dark before 10 p.m. when we started to look for a place to eat something light and to taste Lithuanian beer somewhere in the old town.

We got to outdoor but roofed terrace/patio of Avilio terasa restaurant/bar, on my picture. There were a few costumers there (exclusively Lithuanians) which I found unique in generally empty town at that time. It was nice and cosy atmosphere there. Service was OK, credit cards were accepted.

Favorite Dish: We enjoyed Lithuanian crepes, blackberries cake and tasted Avilys beer brewed in mini-brewery located in cellars of nearby Avilys restaurant (Vilniaus gatve 34). Except various desserts, crepes and beer they offered other drinks incl. wine and three kinds of soups:
- cold red beet soup - 5.00 Lt,
- spicy soup - 6.50 Lt,
- sweet beer soup, for adults only - 7.00 Lt.

The furniture there was made of logs and the waitresses wore national costumes.

Favorite Dish: I had typical Lithuanian dish called cepelinai, which was really yummy! They are made of mashed potatoes and mixed with grated raw potato. Of the dough are made small pancakes, which are filled with meat, mushroom or sour cream and they are boiled in water. I also tasted honey beer, though I cannot say that I would have tasted honey in it.
