Presidential palace in the interwar period

    Going through Vilniaus street you will see a fenced area with palace - it was presidential palace in years 1918-1940 in Lithuania. First Lithuanian president's Antanas Smetona sculpture stands here in park.

    This palace was one of the main buildings in interwar period. Actually, Lithuanian president A. Smetona was a authoritarian and lot of countries decisions was a bussiness of him.

    It haven't took even one minute to deside to go to this museum. I had heard only good words about this place before.

    Not expensive ticket made me think, museum will be not so informative and not so big, but it was vice versa.

    Military museum shows the military history of Lithuania from early age till nowadays. I enjoyed to see huge cannons, suits of armours used by crusaders, XIX century guns and more. I was surprised by new collection of samurais swords and the rabish of famous Lithuanian plane "Lituanica".

    Lithuanian Great Duke Vytautas was really strong man in character and good works he had made in his life. Especially I like him because of many fights with crusaders and the most important battle of Griunwald he participated as commander (in 1410).

    This sculture was built in 1930 interwars period and it commemorates the 500 year from Vytautas death (1430-1930).

    This little and archaic church was built in the second half of XV century in gothic style. It is in Laisves avenue, but to find this church is completely hard - it need to go through an arch. I found this place surprisingly, firstly I thought it is in Gertrudos street, but it wasn't. Inside quite small, but the main altar of this church I guess is one of the oldest in Lithuania.

    Firstly, outside of building is quite modern and with sculpture of nude man. Museums building dated from 1989. This museum is a part of M. K. Ciurlionis National Art museum and named Mykolas Zilinskas in fact of Zilinskas had donated lot of famous paintings to this museum.

    I should mention, I have seen lot of interesting exhibits in this museum. Museum contains even collection of Ancient Egypt and Ancient China works, lot of famous European painters works, modert art and so on.

    House and museum of famous writer Maironis

    From first classes of school we started to read and learn verses of Maironis. Verses talk about history of Lithuania, about feeling to be Lithuanian, lot of verses are written as songs and can be easy sang.

    In the from of Maironis house the sculture of him is standing and he burried in Kaunas Cathedral.

    Laisves avenue was mostly formed in 19th century. I think, it is the most popular street in Kaunas, joining old and new parts of the city.

    If talking about similarities between other cities main streets, I found interesting what almost every city has it own main street for pedestrians as like as Laisves avenue. In Vilnius city it is partly Gediminas avenue, in Siauliai - Liepu avenue and more examples can be found.

    I found Laisves avenue it is place to relax, to go shopping, to meet people and more to do. Lot of most popular and significant objects are in avenue - it is Government of Kaunas, Central Post Office, Tourism Information Centre, Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological museum and more to see and enjoy.

    Vytautas the Great was one of the most famous rulers of medieval Lithuania. His monument was unveiled in 1932, about 500 years after his death in October 1430.

    The bronze statue of Vytautas was designed by V. Grypas. It stands over four defeated soldiers: a Russian, a Pole, a Tartar and a German Crusader.

    Directions
    The Monument to Vytautas the Great can be found towards the western end of Laisves aleja, just at its junction with Sapiegos gatve.

    The Church of the Holy Trinity was constructed in the early 17th century. It is part of a building complex of a Bernadine Monastery.

    The church is a fine example of Northern European Renaissance architecture. Most of the interior with its 9 altars is built in Rococo style.

    The Church of the Holy Trinity is situated near the northwestern corner of the Town Hall Square (Rotuses aikste).

    Maybe it is a strange fact, but the main Kaunas old town's street was named "Vilniaus".

    In the end of Laisves avenue, old town starts with renovated, colorful old town's main street with lot of nice architecture, shops, caffess, bars and so on.

    This cobbled street is the main walking artery to Kaunas Town Hall and all the main must see activities of old part of the city.
