As Kaunas is surrounded by small hills, it is home to two funiculars. One of these is the Zaliakalnis Funicular (Green Hill Funicular) which was opened in 1931. It leads from Putvinskio gatve to Ausros gatve near the Church of the Resurrection. The fare of 50 Centai has to be paid to the conductor on the funicular The other funicular is called Aleksoto funicular and leads from Veiveriu gatve on the left bank of the river Nemunas to the top of the hill from where you can enjoy panoramic views of Kaunas. Inside Kaunas Post Office by HORSCHECK The city centre of Kaunas is best explored on foot, especially as the main street Laisves aleja and some of the side streets are pedestrianised. Please note that the city centre is flat, whereas the near surroundings are a bit hilly. If you are tired from walking you can still catch a local bus as there are plenty of them in Kaunas. Bus tickets can be bought directly from the driver or are available from kiosks. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

We left Kaunas by bus to Nida on the Curonian Spit. The trip took about 4,5 hours and was 48 Litas (14,40 Euro; 2006). The bus station (Autobusu Stotis) can be found at Vytauto gatve 24/26, which is located only 15 minutes on foot southeast of the city centre. It is served by various bus companies from almost all bigger cities in Lithuania. The two main bus companies are: Eurolines: http://www.eurolines.lt/ Kautra Bus Lines: http://www.kautra.lt/ Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Trolley- and minibus by yumyum The main streets in old and new town are for pedestrians only which is very pleasant. The traffic goes around or across. In the minibuses you have to pay directly to the driver when getting on and for the big buses and trolleybuses you can either buy the tickets at the kiosks or with a surcharge from the driver. Don't forget to validate them. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Aleksoto funicular by yumyum This is the only funicular left of the originally two lines. The Aleksoto funicular has been built in 1935 and is Swiss made. You will get a nice ticket and it is very cheap. On top you have a nice view over old town. It runs Monday to Friday from 7 am till 4 pm with a lunch break from 12 am till 1 pm. Alternatively you can take the stairs. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Kaunas bus station by satara If you arrive to Lithuania by plane to Vilnius and after think of visiting Kaunas, I would advice you to take a bus not a train. Two reasons for that: 1) bus is faster and more comfortable; 2) Lithuanian trains are not "the trains" like Western people understand this service - they run slowly and seldom, they are not comfortable even a bit cheaper than buses. Adjustment: according to my friend VT member Loeffle Lithuanian trains are not so bad! I agree with him if comparing Lithuanian trains with Russian ones:) Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Mini-bus in Kaunas by satara Kaunas is the only city in Lithuania where you can find so much these little and speedy mini-buses which work like public transportation+taxi at the same time, i.e. you pay 1 LTL fixed price and you go as long as you need, the mini-bus has it's fixed route (so you have to know it before getting in it, it's written on the mini-bus doors), and you can ask the driver to stop and let you out wherever you want. Pro's: speed and frequency Con's: during peak hours they are full Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The city is situated a bit in a distance from the main road Vilnius-Klaipeda, but it has good connections by busses. It seems the busses or mini-busses go every 15 minutes between Vilnius and Kaunas. The ticket is LTL 17 (EUR 4.8). Leave a Comment Theme: Bus
