Horn of Vente, a peninsula into Curonian Gulf where stands a village of Vente, is famous for seashells - there is one coast of it where whole ground is covered by seashells (without anything inside already), one have even to walk on them since there are no empty places to step on. This is a very good place to find a free souvenire to somebody. Due to people walking on them many seashells are destroyed, though there are many intact ones too, you just have to search and maybe you'd find beutiful ones. Also, there is an ornitology station in Vente from where birds are watched. You can get info about local birds and their migration paths in it. A lighthouse and a pier into Curonian Gulf, which is overwashed by waves during storms, adds to the charm of this place. From Ventes ragas also it's hard to see the other coast - Curonian Spit. Curonian Gulf is quite wde already at this place.
Nida resort town
by Sonic747
The main resort town in the Curonian Spit, although of quite many tourists visiting in summer, is still calmer than it's mainland counterparts. There are some activities here too, however mostly those are "calm" activities (no amusement parks, unlike Palanga and Sventoji for example). Nida, just like all the Curonian Spit in general, is popular to visit by German tourists. From Nida it is possible to go to swim both in Baltic Sea and Curonian Gulf, although Baltic Sea is farther. The town itself is resting near a big sand dune.
Sventoji resort town
by Sonic747
This resort town north of Palanga is part of Palanga municipality. However, experience here can be different from that in Palanga. In Sventoji it is possible to live in "little wooden houses" instead of hotels, these small houses are not far from sea. Town itself is also smaller than Palanga, although it's a major resort also, so at summer there are many people too. At some places prices might be lower than in Palanga.Sventoji beach is quite wide and it is between river of Sventoji and sea.
Neringa (national park): the Curonian Spit
by Sonic747
The Curonian spit, which all except for the very northern tip is made a national park, is one of major natural attractions of Lithuania.Neringa is reachable only by ferry, and perhaps this remoteness adds up to the feeling. It has beutiful sandy dunes (actually, that's it how it all looked 100 years ago before forests were planted to tame sands which frequently used to bury whole villages) and lush forests. 4 small villages in it has a nice atmosphere, much calmer than in mainland resorts of Palanga and Sventoji. You could also taste local fish, visit house of Thomas Mann who used to write here, and enjoy the calmness and beuty of NeringaIt has a downside too though - because of required ferrying to get here and such, prices in Neringa are higher than in mainland resorts.More info at Neringa page:Neringa
Museum of stones (Orvydu sodyba)
by Sonic747
This quite mystically looking outside museum of stone statues and art was created by Orvydas, who used to live in this place. It is not a typical museum since there is no famous art or such here, instead, however, there is stone art made by Orvydas which meaning is hard to understand really - stone statues standing alone near his former farmhouse. There are not only stone statues, but also an old tank and other "instalations". Orvydas himself was a strange person, he used to help people who came out of prisons and lived semi-hermit's life. He died in his "museum", the place of his death near one of the statues is marked.Visiting this place is recommended for people who likes things which couldn't be easily comprehended.
Palanga resort town
by Sonic747
The major resort of Lithuania, it is a bursting metropolis in summers. Definitely a prime spot to visit if you like active tourism, however, if you like calm places without crowds you'd better choose other resorts of Lithuania. Palanga has a wide variety of resort activities, good (but crowded in sunny days) beaches with dunes (although not as spectacular as in Neringa). Also in Palanga there is a national amber museum where you could learn history of amber and see various examples of it, also biggest and most famous ambers. Palanga botanical park (entry is free) is a good place to find some calm which you couldn't get at the center of town. Palanga's "bridge into sea" is a popular romantic walk.Palanga as resort was created by count Tiskevicius, who built first hotel. However, the town is known for 750 years already. Unlike most of Klaipedos Apskritis, it (together with other north part...
Klaipeda
by Sonic747
The capital of Klaipedos Apskritis, and the most known city of it, also the only seaport of Lithuania. Klaipeda as about 250000 inhabittants. It has a beutiful old town and interesting history. For long time it belonged to Germans, and this is visible in cities architecture. Formerly it was known as Memel, was a "free city" after WW1, later was incorporated into Lithuania. Now only a small part of German minority remains due to Russian repressions, there are still lots of German tourists though.Every summer in Klaipeda a "Sea Holiday" (Juros Svente) is organised, usually comprising of concerts and other activities, it attracts people from all Lithuania and elsewhere. In Klaipeda also there is a marine life museum, where dolphin shows are held.Klaipeda, despite being a port, has some beaches too at the north of city, and they are less crowded and some says cleaner than beaches in Palanga.
