Arriving by rail

by Sonic747

The stations of Kretinga and Klaipeda in north are quite frequently accessed by trains from major Lithuanian cities. Kretinga is relatively not far from resort towns of Palanga and Sventoji, while Klaipeda is a major port. Train line goes down southwards through Apskritis, to Silute and then further on to Pagegiai in .Taurages Apskritis . However the more south you go, the less trains there are and in the far south of Apskritis only a few trains per week passes. Thus railway might be a good way to get into Apskritis from other parts of Lithuania, however, it isn't very useful for travelling around the region. Rail system doesn't connects to any of resort towns nor other places of interest like Ventes Ragas, Juknaiciai or Mosedis, and therefore it is more optimised for local people rather than tourists. However, by combining rail travel with other means of transportation, especially...

Arriving by car

Arrival by car to Klaipedos Apskritis is possible through:A1 highway - from Kaunas and Vilnius, the most direct route to reach Klaipeda from there.Panemunes plentas - a scenic route from Kaunas to Klaipeda. It takes longer than A1, but it's recommended if you have time as it goes through some beutiful views and castles. Also there are roads to Palanga from Siauliai and Panevezys, 2 customs with Russia (one of them in Neringa) and 2 customs with Latvia.

Arriving by ship

Arriving by ship to the region is possible through the only port, Klaipeda. There are regular ferry routes to it from Sweden, Denmark and Germany. As well, there is a new cruise ship terminal, so it's possible to get to Klaipeda by taking a cruise too (unfortunately, this way there won't be enough time to see evrything interesting in the region).Ferry lines are operated by LISCO baltic service, owned by DFDS Tor Line (website given below), and are a nice mean to get to Klaipeda from Scandinavia, especially if you want to bring your own car with you too.

There is only international airport in Klaipedos Apskritis, Palanga international airport. Flights from there are opperated mostly by Air Lithuania ( http://www.airlithuania.lt ) and Lithuanian Airlines in summer too ( http://www.lal.lt ). Flights are appoerated mostly to Germany and Scandinavia, though also Russia and Belarus in summer. Also, there is domestic flight to Vilnius in summer season. Some smaller foreign airlines fies to Palanga too.
