Wooden cross by Raimix Especially village people in Lithuania really like carving from wood. The most spread tradition is to carve crosses. In old time a wooden cross in a yard had meant what son of family is a priest. In todays live people place crosses in little villages or just in private territory. Picture shows old carved cross in little village in Kurkliskes, government of Elektrenai. Leave a Comment

You can't visit Lithuania and not bring back some gintaras, or amber. This fossilized tree sap has adorned thrones of kings and tombs of pharaohs for thousands of years. You can find amber with insects inside, though this type of amber is relatively rare and more expensive if you do find it. Amber jewelry, from bracelets to watches, are among the most popular souvenirs from Lithuania. Also wildly popular are Lithuanian wood-carvings. Wood craftsmanship in Lithuania is spectacular. There are assorted favorites, ranging from living figures (serious, humorous or even macabre) to Lithuanian-style crosses. Linen items are an excellent buy. A great place to do some comparative shopping is on Pilies street, where artisans, pensioners and others hock their finest works: including woodwork, paintings of Vilnius and Lithuania, hand-crafted knickknacks and, of course, things made with amber that would stretch the imagination. There are some true bargains here, and some poking around and patience can lead to some real gems. You can also bring home some alcoholic beverages. A few bottles of Utenos or Kalnapilis beer would make things interesting at home, as would a bottle of Kvietino vodka. It's also hard to beat a good bottle of krupnikas, or honey liqueur. Other liqueurs, like Palanga, Dainava, or Sokoladinis, are also popular and make a nice after-dinner drink. Compact discs are also a good buy. Anything by M.K. Ciurlionis would definitely satisfy music lovers. Not all of his works can be found at your local HMV or Tower Records, so it is probably good to stock up here. Also, for the sports fan, why not a basketball jersey of the top team, Zalgiris? Leave a Comment

me pouring H2O on the rocks&holding juniper branch by mrdarius Wet saunas are very popular in Lithuania, especially handmade ones in "Sodyba," something Americans would call country homes. These differ from dry or Scandinavian saunas in that they are normally made of wood, and water is poured on heated rocks to create a sweating effect. One very healthy practice in these saunas is taking young juniper branches, dipping them in water and hitting them on the back of someone laying in the sauna. It is supposed to be supreme when it comes to relaxing your muscles and opening your pores. One trick Lithuanians like to play (and I've seen this happen more than once) is to hit you with the juniper branches until you can't bear it any longer due to the extreme heat. While you're suffering away, someone else in the sauna fetches a cold bucket of water and dumps it on your back at the moment of the most excrutiating heat. Very funny! Leave a Comment

by Leipzig Amber is probably the most attractive tourist souvenir in Lithuania. It originally is fossilized pine tree sap. Amber is attractive as jewellery because of its light yellow color. In Lithuania you can buy it quite cheaply. If you just want to see how it is used in jewellery or to see some prehistoric insects in amber I recommend to visit the Palanga Amber Museum. by Raimix I can't really agree what basketball for Lithuanians like culture. But we call this game "second religion of Lithuania". There were formed such teams like Zalgiris, Lietuvos Rytas. Zalgiris had won 1998 Euroleague Cup, Lietuvos Rytas is always showing a good paricipations in other competitions. Have you remembered when Lithuanian National Basketball Team won third place in Olimpic Games in 2000 in Sydney. I can't forget a game Lithuania - USA, then our team was near the winning. In Olimpic Games of 2004 Lithuania won nothing - 4th place, they lost against USA team in small final. Anyway, people were happy when Lithuania first time in history won against USA NBA stars in group game. About European Basketball championships - Lithuania has 3 gold medals and 1 silver. The last gold "was made" in 2003 in final game against Spain. Link of European medals: http://www.vilacom.net/basketball/eurobasket.php Taking all into account, Lithuania is really competitive in basketball and if you come to Lithuania don't forget to participate in watching match of basketball. by Redule One my friend, who lives in 1000 km from Vilnius tried to prove me that our grannies paint Easter eggs using template! What an insult! It’s really difficult to decorate an egg as in the picture right and not every granny will do it. If she can do it, we start calling her a master. The shell is carved with razor creating various Lithuanian symbols of nature revival: suns, leaves, birds, firs, etc. The other, easer way is to paint the egg with wax and to soak into dye. But the easiest way is to wrap up the egg into onion peel, add some herbs that will leave their print on the shell and to boil the egg in the dyes of different colours. Leave a Comment
