The stones along side the dirt road. by Grazina The story goes, that a man and his father were in the grave headstone business. When the Russians were in the land they made the father dig up these huge boulders to clear the land for farming, and so he would bring back to his place the stones. He craved out beautiful headstone. But the son started to crave images of Christ, and the Mother Mary, among other great works of art such as crosses, coat of arms, and other church related icon. He (the son) was said to have attendant a school to become a priest but did not completed the full term because of disagreement on doctines...and said he didn't need a piece of paper to do the "will" of God. by CliffClaven Nobody can say they didn't visit Trakai because of the cost. The 45-minute train ride from Vilnius to the lake with its island castle costs less than a dollar. The train chugs through the wooded landscape and arrives at Trakai station, leaving you a couple of kilometres to walk to the castle. Lots of sunbathers on the shores of the lake in summer - and the beer is less than half the price you have to pay in the trendy city bars in Vilnius.

Iron Head (looks impressive in the snow) by giedre The real geographical centre of Europe is just 25km. north of Vilnius. In 1989 it was marked by the French National Institute of Geography. The center of Europe can be found driving on the Moletai highway till road sign to Bernotai. This park is located in a beautiful forest, where a lot of sculptures can be found . Leave a Comment

The sole building w/ this function in Lithuania by Grazina As we were walking along this windy road in the Old Town we came across the Presidential Palace which does give small tours inside. The palace is built in the late Classical (Empire) style, monumental and solemn. Having designed many significant buildings in St. Peterburg, Stasov followed the patterns of St. Petersburg architecture here as well. The palace has 3 risalitas protruding into the square and the courtyard the square facade is decorated by triangular pediments, a parapet and Doric columns. Leave a Comment

by DanielF Ginuciai is another of the well-preserved farmsteads in the national Park Aukstaitija. Ginuciai looked like an open-air museum of traditional architecture, where the most outstanding building was this reconstructed watermill, which, obviously, is made of wood. Leave a Comment

postcard by Grazina It's in the old town of Vilnius, but lots of windy streets so don't get lost. The postcard show the Palace before being demolished around 1793. Right now the Parliament enacted a law to restore the Palace for the millenium celebration of Lithuania's name in 2009. Too help restore..... MAP OF LITHUANIA by Raimix I have added a map of Lithuania. It's because I want to show where are places showed in my "Must See Activities". These places are numbered in map. Firstly (the best way), is to start travel from Vilnius(1). 'Cause all tipes of transportation and all kind of travel information are easily reached in this city. By the way to Kaunas(4) you can see Trakai(2) and Rumsiskes(3). Highway Vilnius - Kaunas - Klaipeda is in really good condision with a lot of rest-houses. From Klaipeda raft will take you to Kursiu Nerija, there you will find Lithuanian "Sachara" - resort of Nida(7). Palanga(8) is reachable from Klaipeda. Siauliai is outsanding city from highway, this city is in nothern Lithuania, but worth to see. I had been in all places I wrote here, so I highly recomend then to see. Leave a Comment

where is Lithuania? by Raimix The most ridiculous question is: where are Lithuania? A lot of people from foreign countries don't know about it. Sometimes they ask: "What is mean Lithuania?" When one my friend have been in France, he asked passer-by: "Where are Lithuania". Passer-by smiled and said: "Somethere in Africa". Bad knowledge in geography can cause smiling, due to this I have put a map. Leave a Comment

Dzukija National Park is the biggest one in Lithuania. And, probabaly, the most unique because the nature is less touched and old traditions are more significant here. And Zervynos is most interesting among all those villages of the park. It's a protected by goverment and only few changes reached the place since the end of XIX century. Of course village itself is much older than that , but most of building come from this period. It's not allowed to build anything modern or out of local style. Acctually, there are little chance that you would be allowed to build anything at all- a new people cannot settle down here unless their family owned some property before World War II. It feels like stepping back in when you see Zervynos- tiny dark wooden houses scattered among hills of Dzukija. It looks so sleapy and calm , especially, when you come there in early morning. No wonder artists come there for summer camps....... Still this lovely place hides some danger -sand roads may trap your car. But don't worry- local people are ussed to that- they would offer you help. And even in this remote and ancient time mobile service works perfectly well. Leave a Comment

by Redule Once all of Lithuania was covered with forests which contained many oak groves which were considered sacred. The Labanoras, Dainava and other woodlands are full of mushrooms and berries each year. In some of the larger forests and remote areas, one can still find wolves, foxes, wild boars, deers, elks, and other large mammals as well as rare birds. Bisons, once common in Lithuania, were driven to extinction. Leave a Comment
