Kernave - the first capital of Lithuania

by zaffaran

Situated not far from Vilnius (approx.37 km) easily accessible by car (road A2 Panevezys direction, at Bukiskis turn left into road No 171).Beautifully located on the Neris, the museum to see.A nice place for the picnic.

Eye Of The River

by remigia

It won't be a lie to say that the Ula river is one of the most beautiful in Lithuania. It's very popular among kayak and canoe fans because of it's rather wild( by our Lithuanian standarts) stream and the most picturesque banks. And if you are taking water trip in Dzukija national park or visiting Zervynos take a break in the Ula Valley where the river starts. And look straight into Ula eye to see your own reflection.

Zervynos-Step Back In Time

Dzukija National Park is the biggest one in Lithuania. And, probabaly, the most unique because the nature is less touched and old traditions are more significant here. And Zervynos is most interesting among all those villages of the park. It's a protected by goverment and only few changes reached the place since the end of XIX century. Of course village itself is much older than that , but most of building come from this period. It's not allowed to build anything modern or out of local style. Acctually, there are little chance that you would be allowed to build anything at all- a new people cannot settle down here unless their family owned some property before World War II.It feels like stepping back in when you see Zervynos- tiny dark wooden houses scattered among hills of Dzukija. It looks so sleapy and calm , especially, when you come there in early morning. No wonder artists come...

One of the homes of one of the most powerful families in Lithuania and Poland - the Radziwills. The castle (surrounded by the park) was built in the 16th century and in the 17th transformed into palazzo di fortezza. Now it contains a museum, but a foreigner will not enjoy the exhibits as ALL the subtitles are in Lithuanian and no other info is provided. The castle is just in the centre of the city, but not well seen from the main street -hidden behind the church.

This is a must even if you are not a religious person, because it's so special and remarkable. The name can be as "the mountain of crosses". In fact people bring there crosses which symbolize people's intentions and thankfulness. The place can be easily found - while driving from Siauliai to Riga in Domantai (a bus stop) turn right and follow the signs.

The town on our way to Riga. The guidebook mentions a few object worth visiting (Renessaince cathedral, a uninque Muzeum of Bicycles and an old Guberniya Brewery) but we were a bit short of time so we only stopped for a while by the old municipal cemetery which was situated on the tiny hill just by the road.

Out of the old town on the opposite bank of the river there's a St.George's church which was built by the Teutonic Knights in the beginning of the 16th century. It was also closed but to our surprise we found e few Polish graves around it.

The centre of the town is not very big so you can easily get to St.Joseph wooden baroque church which is mentioned as one of the most important monuments in the city. Unfortunately, it was closed and there's nobody to let us in.

This rather small town is situated in central Lithuania. To get there you must follow road A1 Kaunas -Klaipeda, but after a few kilometres turn right into A8 to Ponevezys and at Nociunai turn left into road No 144. Nice place to have a stop!

Discover the topsecret Soviet nuclear missile silo

by Niekie

Deep in the forests of Zemaitija national park lies the former topsecret Soviet nuclear rocket launchbase of Plokstine. On the surface you can only see the four domeshaped roofs of the silo's, but underground there is a maze of corridors, steel doors, stairways and rooms of which one can now only guess what their the function once was. Visiting this site was one of the most fascinating and disturbing experiences I had in Lithuania. To me it was fascinating to see how the Lithuanians have opened up their country and seem to display a certain eagerness to share with the world what the Soviet Union has done to them. And I must admit I was very curious to see it. But when the tour finally led us to the actual missile silo where a 22 meter long nuclear missile once had been stationed, ready to be fired at any target within 2000 kilometer, curiosity quickly made way for horror. The full...
