The Front of the Presidential Palace

by Grazina

As we were walking along this windy road in the Old Town we came across the Presidential Palace which does give small tours inside. The palace is built in the late Classical (Empire) style, monumental and solemn. Having designed many significant buildings in St. Peterburg, Stasov followed the patterns of St. Petersburg architecture here as well. The palace has 3 risalitas protruding into the square and the courtyard the square facade is decorated by triangular pediments, a parapet and Doric columns.

Nida

by rollinstone81

In Nida, the last town before the Russian border on the curonian spit, you can see old arcitecture from times when Germans still inhabited the area, before 1945. The houses are real nice and cute, nicely painted and clean. There is a Thomas Mann Museum on Skruzdynes gatve. The famous german author spent the summers of 1930-32 in this house. I also like the harbour, which isnt too busy, but rather quite and makes a nice place to relax, have some food and beer.

Beaches on the Curonian Spit

by rollinstone81

I personally find the beaches on the spit much nicer then Palanga, because they are not as crowded. The further you go away from where the ferry lands the lonelier it usually gets. After the late autumn and winter storms you can search for amber washed to its shores.

Curonian Spit National Park

by rollinstone81

The reason why you should go there is the natural beauty of this small (never more then 4km wide) piece of land that is 98km long and reaches into Russian territory as well. (Kaliningrada region). It is forrested with pines and famous dunes especially in the Nida region, which is very close to the Russian border. To get to the Curonian spit from the Lithuanian mainland take the ferry from Klaipeda (there is a foto in the transportation tips folder). Take a walk in the dunes and have the baltic sea on the one side and the curonian lagoon on the other, both of which you can see at the same time. Remember that it is not allowed to walk off the paths', so be cool and obey to that rule.

Chill out up north with farms and great beer

by RB_Oakes

The northern part of Lithuania is beautiful - farms, marshes and lazy rivers. Transport is cheap. If you can find local beer, especially in Pasvalys and Pakroujis, it is outstanding and they basically give it away. A great place to get away from the world.

Ginuciai

by DanielF

Ginuciai is another of the well-preserved farmsteads in the national Park Aukstaitija. Ginuciai looked like an open-air museum of traditional architecture, where the most outstanding building was this reconstructed watermill, which, obviously, is made of wood.

Trakai City and Lake

by handsoum

Only 30 minutes from Vilnius and 45 minutes from Kaunas, you will find this beautiful lakeside city which hosts a Romanic Castle that has been fully restored between 1997 and 2003. The castle is on an island in the middle of the lake and is accessible by a wooden bridge. I hadn't expected to find such a beautiful place in Lithuania. Trakai bares very little traces of the communist era and is a traditionnal Lithuanian city. It is possible to rent canoes on the lake and there are some excellent restaurants on the waterfront. There are also many souvenir outlets and accordeon players along the forrest ways and the sides of the lake. As most of Lithuania, Trakai seems a very safe place for tourists. It is ideal for a lunch break or a sunny afternoon walk for those spending some time in Vilnius.
