Lietuvos Valdovu Rumus/Royal Palace of Lithuania

by Grazina

It's in the old town of Vilnius, but lots of windy streets so don't get lost. The postcard show the Palace before being demolished around 1793. Right now the Parliament enacted a law to restore the Palace for the millenium celebration of Lithuania's name in 2009.Too help restore.....

Somewhere in the east of Lithuania.

by Grazina

The story goes, that a man and his father were in the grave headstone business. When the Russians were in the land they made the father dig up these huge boulders to clear the land for farming, and so he would bring back to his place the stones. He craved out beautiful headstone. But the son started to crave images of Christ, and the Mother Mary, among other great works of art such as crosses, coat of arms, and other church related icon. He (the son) was said to have attendant a school to become a priest but did not completed the full term because of disagreement on doctines...and said he didn't need a piece of paper to do the "will" of God.

The Mount of Crosses

by cosmogypsy

This place is amazing. Now I am not a religious person, but when you see all of these crosses, it is beautiful!!! They are all different and there are just so many of them. My Lithuanian friends told me a story that during Soviet times, the Russians came in and bulldozed all of the crosses. The following day the people awoke to all of the crosses returned to their original place.

Island castle

by CliffClaven

Nobody can say they didn't visit Trakai because of the cost. The 45-minute train ride from Vilnius to the lake with its island castle costs less than a dollar. The train chugs through the wooded landscape and arrives at Trakai station, leaving you a couple of kilometres to walk to the castle. Lots of sunbathers on the shores of the lake in summer - and the beer is less than half the price you have to pay in the trendy city bars in Vilnius.

Lithuanian national parks

Lithuania is a nature place too, so enjoy its national parks.Zemaitija. - comprises the village and lake of Plateliai. There live Samogitians, a separate ethnic and cultural group of the Lithuanian nation, with a peculiar dialect, traditions and farmhouses. Trakai - the most famous, 25km west of Vilnius, is the site of the old castle of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. It is situated on an island in Lake Galve, which also hosts water sports, kayaking and sailing.Aukstaitija - is 100km north of Vilnius. It includes many lakes and old forest. Dzukija - is located 75km southwest of Vilnius, with a pleasant wood, several ancient villages and historic castle ruins.

NATURE again and again

by Redule

Once all of Lithuania was covered with forests which contained many oak groves which were considered sacred. The Labanoras, Dainava and other woodlands are full of mushrooms and berries each year. In some of the larger forests and remote areas, one can still find wolves, foxes, wild boars, deers, elks, and other large mammals as well as rare birds. Bisons, once common in Lithuania, were driven to extinction.

Well, on our visit, we were with friends of ours, who, again, were natives. They showed us around the hospital and the medical school, which was really cool, especially as a little kid to see severed body parts, organs, and heads floating in jars lining the walls. On a brighter note, we went to visit our guest's relatives in the countryside. Way out in the middle of nowhere, we came to the house of an older woman. We talked for a while, then us boys (my father, brother, the Lithuanian doctor, and I) took a walk through the woods. Our mission was two-fold, to A. find and pick mushrooms for dinner that night, and two take a long walk in the amazing, cool, and rainy forests of Lithuania. We walked and walked, finally reaching a lake, then turned around to come back. Besides finding that we were somewhat lost, we found patch after patch of wild blueberries... soooooooo goooooooood... Our...

by aistute

Centre of EuropeIn 1989 the French National Geographical Institute named a spot on the road to Moletai, 25km (15mi) north of Vilnius, as the centre of Europe. It's marked by a small, granite sculpture that has been vandalised, but a new sculpture - a pyramid with all the European capitals and their distances from the centre marked on it - is planned for the site. To get there, turn right off the Vilnius-Moletai road at the 'Europas Centras' sign.TrakaiThis old Lithuanian capital is now a small, quiet town in an attractive country area of lakes and islands. Most of the town stands on a peninsula dotted with old wooden cottages, many of them built by the Karaites - a Judaist sect originating in Baghdad that adheres to the Law of Moses. The Karaites were brought to Trakai by Vytautas the Great around 1400 AD to serve as bodyguards, and about 150 of them still live here. Their numbers are...

I believe that most of the tourists in Lithuania would typically miss one of the most beautiful places in Auks^taitija (one of the ethnic regions in Lithuania). This place is Auks^taitija National Park-Lithuania's first national park, which was designated in 1974 and covers the area of 40570 hectares in regions of Ignalina, Utena and Svencionys. There is not only the beautiful nature, but also quite a lot of other cultural monuments. You can find rare plants there that are listed in the Red Data Book of Lithuania, as well as a variety of birds. This could be a really exciting experience.
