Guides

The only guide I could find in Brussels Lithuania is the Lonely Planet that covers all the three Baltic Republics. I am not very fond of these guides, but it provided the basic information for planning the route. When in Lithuania, I could buy many more guides with more indepth insignt on architecture, nature and culture. In this picture I was emulating the cover of the Lonely planet guide for the Baltics: an unusual perspective of the Orthodox church of Saint Michael the Archangel, in Kaunas.

Weather in summer

by Redule

Summers differ very much from each other. Sometimes they are rainy from the start to the end, sometimes they are hot without a little drop of rain. You should be lucky to come in Lithuania at a right weather. However, we have some trends of weather changes, developed through many years. The end of May is usually sunny, the middle of June sometimes is cool (around +17C) and from the beginning of July, “12 Brothers Piddles” hang on the sky. This means that it rains with dogs and cats throughout two weeks. Usually we go on vacation at the end of July and in August, and I suggest visiting Lithuania in August. Temperature is usually +27+30C in this month.

Weather in spring

by Redule

Spring and autumn are such seasons that we hardly notice. It looks like after winter comes summer and after summer – winter. We find that we don’t need demi-season shoes. Jump directly into sandals from heavy winter shoes. But quickly changing green tones, blooming violets, chirping larks in the sky, and rippling streamlets say that the spring is here. The temperature is around +10+15C. March is still covered with wet snow, April - the earth comes dry and May - the most pleasant month of the spring.

Weather in Autumn

Umbrella in autumn is essential. The beginning of September usually does not differ from summer, I remember +25+30C in the first week of September. But temperature slumps so quickly that we have to change sandal shoes to winter shoes. The typical view of November is in the dreary picture left: cold, dirty, wet and windy.

Weather in winter

In order to help with packing I want to give you weather descriptions.Winter starts quite early in Lithuania. The first snow drops even in October sometimes. But it’s not winter it’s only our dreary autumn.Sometimes winter lasts up to 6 months starting at the end of November and ending in April. As a rule, Christmas are always very cold (-25C), but on the New Year it’s always warmer, (~ 0,-5C).We think that January is usually cold and February has a lot of snow. Normally, the temperatures vary from 0C to –10C, sometimes cruelly dropping to –25C and more.

If you are planing on going there in winter time, please don't forget to take some really really warm clothes and shoes. I just got back from Vilnius and it was so cold there, one day I almost froze my feet. Never joke with the mother nature, especially in winter time in Lithuania! It's feezing! The day that I left it was -13 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a picture I took through the train window on a way to Klaipeda.

We went to Lithuania in the begining of June, it suppost to be summer but it was very cold for me:) It was windy, sometimes raining..only few days we got sunny and warm. Basicaly, I needed a good rain jacket, jumpers and GOOD SHOES as you never know when they get wet. Anything you need - you will find there. Funny enough but when I needed to buy a flopy disk for my digital camera - most of sales people DIDn'T know what is it!!:))
