Klaipeda is a third biggest city in Lithuania. At the moment it is one of the biggest ports in Baltic sea. Despite of lot of destruction, still some old remains left. City is rich with its small, but cozy old town, also some nice place in new town could be found.

It is possible to spend 1-2 days in Klaipeda to get good acquaintance of city.

Klaipeda is about 28 kilometers from Palanga.

Sventoji - more silent seaside place than Palanga

by Raimix Updated Apr 24, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

First settlement in Sventoji is known as far as 5000 years back. As a port it was already used in 12th century. It was one of the main ports of former Lithuania, as Klaipeda belonged to Prussia.

In interwar times in 20th century a few piers were built, fishermen settlement was created. Nowadays it belongs to Palanga. Anyway, it is more silent and cheaper than Palanga to take a rest by the sea.

Sventoji is about 14 kilometers from Palanga.

For further information you could visit my page of Sventoji.

    by diamond7 Updated Apr 6, 2008

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Liepaja, in Latvia.
Of you are in Palanga you are only 70 km away from an important town of Latvia. I think you must go there, as this way, you can see as the people have really very different costumes and styles of life, at each of the two countries.

You have direct bus, departing from Klaipeda, in the morning.

    Crowded beach

by ginte Updated Oct 11, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you want to have a calm holiday at as empty as possible beach, then don't expect to find this in Palanga. The beach is always crowded here in summer, even in the evenings. If you like many people at the beach, music, games - Palanga is for you. But at the end of the summer or in September when the weather is still warm, the beach is more empty and you can enjoy calm atmosphere.

Go to a similar place - Sventoji (15 minutes by a mini bus) or hire a bike, there's a path for bicycles it's not difficult to go there and back surroundend by pine tree forest, go to Kretinga: it's a small town, very cute, with another esate, winter garden (orangery) inside, particular but beautiful monastery of bernardins, Lurd (take a mini bus o normal bus from the bus station, 15 minutes to go). If you are not visiting a Curiorian Split - change your mind! You must go there to see fantastic dunes, a Lagon and the Sea. make a day trip or go there for a couple of days (from Klaipeda take a ferry or order an excursion in the tourist office).
