Lithuanian food

by ginte

Dairy products and potatoes are mainstays of the Lithuanian diet, and pancakes are particularly popular. A traditional (and unforgettable) meal is cepelinai, a zeppelin-shaped parcel of a glutinous substance (allegedly potato dough), with a wad of cheese, meat or mushrooms in the centre. It comes topped with a sauce made from onions, butter, sour cream and bacon bits. Sakotis is a tall, Christmas-tree shaped cake generally served at weddings, while dinner on Christmas Eve consists of 12 different vegetarian dishes. Svyturys and Utenos are the best local brands of beer, perhaps preferable to midus (mead), which can be as much as 60% proof. Those who prefer to make their own decision about when to lie down should look out for stakliskes, a honey liqueur.

Eating The Lithuanian Way

by giedre

Lithuanian meals are simple but filling. Traditional specialties include skilandis (smoked meat), šaltibaršèai (cold beet soup), cepelinai (potato dumplings with minced meat filling), védarai (potato sausages) and bulviniai blynai (potato pancakes). Smoked eel is a famous Baltic delicacy. There are many regional specialties. The Highlanders, or Aukštaièiai, who live in the northeast region, are known for their pancakes and cottage cheese dishes. The žemaièiai, who inhabit the lowlands, are known for herbed dips, porridges and gruels. In the southeast region, buckwheat, mushrooms and potatoes are important staples, and in the southwest, smoked meats, sausages and cepelinai (dumplings) are part of many dishes. A traditional breakfast may be bread and cheese with cold cuts, or pancakes filled with cheese. At lunch, many Lithuanians enjoy a hearty soup or stew. Cold beetroot soup is...

Some general info: Lithuanian food

by giedre

CULINARY SPECIALITIESLithuanians have always been known for their hospitality. It is said that 'if u do not love other people, u will not be loved'.When expecting guests, Lithuanians go all out of food & drink, for they want the guests to comment'there was an abudance of everything, the only food was missing was bird's milk'.You stay in Vilnius should include at least one visit to any of the local Lithuanian restorants, where,in a unique atmosphere u can enjoy a live folk band playing. Taste the true national Lithuania dishes & drink delicious Lithuanian beer! SALTIBARSCIAI(COLD BEET SOUP)the cold creamed beet soup is very popular summer fare. It usually contains cold eggs, & is served with a slide dish of hot boiled potatoes.VEDARAI( POTATO SAUSAGE)These 'sausages'differed among regions, but the most popular are traditional potato-stuffed sausages whose usually are served with sour cream...

Restaurants for Lithuanian...

by Redule

Restaurants for Lithuanian food: "Cili kaimas", "Forto dvaras", "Marceliukes kletis" in Vilnius You can find it in any Lithuanian restaurant, but if you want, you can make it by yourself: Ingredients: 1 kg uncooked potatoes, 3 or 4 boiled potatoes, ground beef, milk curd or mushrooms. Peel and grate the raw potatoes, then squeeze out the excess liquid from them through cheesecloth. Let the starch settle to the bottom of the liquid, then pour the liquid off and add the starch back to the potatoes. Peel and mash the boiled potatoes, then add them to the grated ones. Add a dash of salt and knead the mass well. Then take approximately egg-sized pieces of this mixture and form into patties. Place spoonfuls of the previously prepared filling into the center of the patties. Most often such a filling is made from ground beef, milk curd or mushrooms with salt and spices. Close the patties around...

Simple but tasty

by lotharlerch

Lithuania is not a country of 'grande cuisine' but you can get simple, honest and tasty food. To rise your appetite look at the respective vvery tempting pages of my VT-friends vysnaite and Redule. Other than in Lithuania's early years you can find now lots of good restaurants but in these it is sometimes difficult to get the cepelinai described by my Lithuanian VT friends, normally you get them at the cheaper places. I like the 'suris', a white fresh cheese which can be accompanied of almost everything but I like it most with the fantastic dark and slightly acid rye bread 'juoda duona'.And in a country with so many lakes you can expect excellent fish. When you see places where fresh smoked fish is offered (for example in the center of Nida on the Couronian Spit) it is an absolute must to try them, best when the fish is still warm. One of my favourites is the smoked pike (lideka).

T.V. Tower: Meal fit for a king or even for Queen Vere'

by Grazina

First Class, 2 thumbs up, coming back for more in 2004. Not only does it have a restaurant but a small museum is dedicated in memory to the fallen freedom fighters. The tower entered Lithuania's history on January 13th 1991, when fighters for independence were killed while defending the tower. It was built in 1980, it has a height of 326 m (higher than the Eiffel Tower). A shy-high "Pauksciu takas" cafe' is open in the tower. WOW!!! Outstanding view. Sirloin Steak-Pork with all the works...If you don't want to eat than you can just pay 5 Lt and just see the view from there.

Pub grub

by CliffClaven

The Pub is in a side street just off the main street running through the old centre of Vilnius. It has a courtyard bar, with a sliding roof that can be closed during the dismal Lithuanian winters. In summer, however, it's pleasant to sit over a couple of beers during the heat of midday. The menu offers international pub staples - lasagna, shepherd's pie - at very reasonable prices. The Pub seems to attract an interesting mix of ages and nationalities. It also has an easy to remember web address (www.pub.lt).
