Can you believe that? I couldn't.. Well, I know it was 400 years since first school was established in Rietavas in the year I graduated, but I was surprised to hear that my special town has 750 years of history... 2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Cafe "Jura" (which means "sea") is located near the bus station, so it's quite a good place to stop for a snack on your way to Rietavas or through Rietavas to other cities.

Favorite Dish: In Soviet times it used to be a canteen and I still remember taking there some compote ("kompotas") when I was kid. Nowadays it's fully reorganized, restored and has authentic Lithuanian wooden+brick restaurant look. The food is quite good, not much of choices though, but you can't expect to have various cuisine food in a such small town, can you?:)

Rietavas is a small town so you won't find any public transportation there except taxi. But it's really no need to take taxi to go around this little town. Especially if you have some bikes you can reach all the places there. The streets are in quite good condition, you can ride the bike even in the park roads, but some of them are a bit bumpy because some part of the old road is made of stones.. Enjoy your walk or ride!:)

Rietavas Local Customs

  • Ice cream lady or Liberty statue?

Lithuanians used to start there town by making a square in the middle which was meant to be the main place of the town. They used to build some monuments in there, usually representing their struggle for freedom. Rietavas also has its own Liberty Statue - a girl with torch of liberty. But in my memory it has a name of "ice cream lady" because...

That requires lots of patience and help from your family members or friends. Lithuanians use plants' leaves, wax, onion peels and many other kinds of stuff to decorate Easter eggs. In Rietavas surroundings the Easter egg decoration is quite different than in other Lithuania places or big towns. For more details look at my Rietavas travelogue about...

Rietavas Favorites

  • Fond of ponds?

Rietavas people are fond of ponds. They have at least two big ones in the center of town. One is called "Maluno prudas" which means a pond of mill. In summer time the couple of white swans used to live here. It's also a favorite place of local fishermen who prefer to spend their Sunday on the shore instead of listening to their "angry" wives..:)

The fields of gold.. yeah... it's almost like in this song - when summer flowers bloom, all the meadows and fields look golden, snowy, rosy etc.. That's really a great time to visit Rietavas. I love that smell of just cut grass.. and I like the smell of hay.. it reminds me of so many happy moments of my childhood helping my grandma in hay time.
