    You can find many sculptures and statues of all kind in Siauliai's city centre.

    The Pelicans were erected in 1978 to commemorate two pelicans which failed to keep up with the flock and got lost in Siauliai. At least that's the sory behind the sculpture. The Pelicans are situated at the crossing of the streets Vilniaus and Tilzes.

    The Grandfather and his grandchildren was created in 1976 by B. Kasperaviciene and has earned a place on Lithuania's list of cultural
    monuments. It can be found in the public garden
    of Prisikelimo Square.

    The Reading Man reminds of times when Siauliai was a major centre of the press. The statue was erected in 1983 and is located near Tilzes street 151.

    The Motherhood can be found at the crossing of the streets Vilniaus and Kastonu. The sculpture was erected in 1979 and represents the relation between a mother and her child.

    Siauliai has a few historic and architectural interesting buildings. Among them are the Frenkel's Palace (Vilniaus 74) which is a 1908 mansion and the Zubovs Palace (Ausros 50). The palace was built at the end of the 17th century and houses the Faculty of Arts.

    Other nice buildings include the girls' Didzvaris Grammar School from the middle of the 19th century and the former boys' J. Janonis Grammar School which celebrated its 150th anniversairy in 2001.

    The tourist office was very helpful by giving us a list of accomodations including price, location etc. In their shop you can also buy maps, the Siauliai In Your Pocket guide and another pamphlet with the sights. They can advise you on bicyle tours in the surrounding countryside etc. and they sell a few souvenirs as well.

    After years of building new constructions and reconstruction (after World War II) city got an appearance of more soviet city. There are almost no buildings older than, let say, 200 years.

    Photo taken in Vilniaus street shows long time not produced cigarettes’ brand “Kastytis”. People associate it with soviet times; these cigarettes were still without tip. Actually I don’t know why such public art in street still left – maybe it is nostalgia to not so deep past?

    The phrase “Siauliai is city-phoenix” is known after the last biggest rehabilitation and reconstruction of city. It happened after World War II, as about 85 percent of old buildings were completely destroyed before. I believe that city looked much nicer before war. As I know, there are more places around this part of Europe having such “phoenix” titles – let say, Warsaw in Poland.

    Hill Of Crosses - I myself have been to this place at least three times. I remember visiting first time, I was a child then and a place looked quite spooky to my mind at first glance then :) It really has some mystic and pagan spirit, some mystery and some special feelings. First of all, traditional Lithuanian craft from old times was - wooden architecture, wooden sculptures, wooden crosses as a craft also inherit many pagan symbols and details.
