If you will be near the Baltic see in Lithuania, you should see Palanga, called "summer capital". It is great resort with lot of to see (like some museums, palace, church, sea and more) and do as it has great number of restaurants, caffees, bars, hotels and more.

In photo I am near statue of St Maria in Tiskeviciai park in Palanga.

Other places of interest in Lithuania include the small riverside spa resort of Druskininkai, situated 135km (84 miles) from Vilnius, and the small town of Rumsiskes, 80km (50 miles) from Vilnius and 20km (12.5 miles) from Kaunas, with its open-air museum of wooden architecture exhibiting farmhouses from all the various regions of the country. Popular seaside resorts include Palanga. Palanga also boasts the Amber Museum and an interesting botanical park. Nida is the last village on the Lithuanian half of the spit surrounded by endless stretches of clean white sand. A lighthouse from 1874 can be visited here, as can the Thomas Mann Museum, situated in the house where the German writer spent his holidays between 1930-32.

  • Wonderful panorama of Vilnius in the postcard - Lithuania
    Wonderful panorama of
    Vilnius in the postcard
    by ginte
The historic city of Vilnius (founded in 1323) is the capital of Lithuania. Surrounded on three sides by wooded hills and situated in a picturesque valley formed by the rivers Neris and Vilnia, the ancient yet modern centre of the city lies on the southern or left bank of the river. Unlike Tallinn and Riga in the other Baltic Republics, Vilnius is not of Germanic origin, although like these other cities it has a large old quarter which is gradually being restored. Almost all major European architectural styles are represented, although ultimately it was the Baroque which came to dominate. The heart of the capital is the beautiful and spacious Gediminas Square, the main feature of which is the Cathedral built in the Classical style. Other interesting churches are the Gothic St Anne's Church and the St Peter and St Paul's Church, which houses the body of St Casimieras, one of the most revered of Lithuania's dukes. It also includes some fine sculptures. Any itinerary of the city should include the historic University of Vilnius, which was granted its charter in 1579, the Golden Age in the city's history. The university is among the oldest universities in Central Europe and has a distinctly Renaissance feel with its inner courtyards and arcades. To enjoy a view of the whole city, you should climb the tower of Gediminas Castle. High on a hill in the centre of the city, it rises above Vilnius and is the symbol of the Lithuanian capital.

To the west of Vilnius lies the industrial and cultural centre of Kaunas, Lithuania's second city. Also known as the "city of museums" it boasts, amongst others, the Museum of Devil's Sculptures and a memorial to those who suffered during the Nazi occupation. The most famous museum is dedicated to the works of the Lithuanian painter Ciurlionis. Kaunas also numbers three theatres, some 11th-century castle ruins and the old City Hall among its attractions. A little bit out of town near the Kauno Marios you will find a magnificent baroque monastery which was originaly built in the 17th century.

  • While travelling through Lithuania don't forget to visit more than one city. Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and the largest city what means that it's the most beautiful. The Old Town of Vilnius is inscribed into Unesco World Heritage List. But for to know the beauty of Lithuania it isn't enough to see only this city. There are many smaller, but also nice cities as well as wonderful nature. Kaunas is the second largest city located at the confluence of two biggest Lithuanian rivers: the Nemunas and the Neris. Klaipeda is the only port and a third biggest city of Lithuania. If you are in Lithuania more than 1-2 days, it's necessary to visit all these three biggest cities. If your visit here is a little bit longer, I would suggest you to visit Trakai - most tourists have a tour there while they are in Vilnius. It's a perfect trip for one day. One of the main towns in the north of the country is Siauliai with the famous Hill od Crosses. Also I would suggest you to visit a wonderful and unique path of Lithuania - Curonian Spit with the settlements of Nida and Juodkrante which are famous for their clean white sand beaches, natural sand dunes and pine forests. It is inscribed into Unesco World Heritage List as well as a hidden treasure - Kernave.

    Trakai insular castle
    by ginte
Trakai is one of Lithuania's many former capital. The Trakai National Park was designated in 1992 to embrace the historic city of Trakai, some 25 kilometers outside Vilnius, and the forests, lakes and villages in its environs. The total area of the park is 82 sq. kilometers. The most valuable monuments in the park are the Trakai insular castle, the remnants of the peninsula castle and the ancient site of the Senieji Trakai (Old Trakai) castle with a church and village.

  • Lake castle, Trakai - Lithuania
    Lake castle, Trakai
    by DanielF
Trakai is a small town that was once the capital of the country. It is located not far away from Vilnius, which makes it a perfect day-trip destination from the capital.

The city is built on a narrow peninsula between two lakes and has no more than a handful of narrow streets lined with picturesque wooden houses. But the real draw of Trakai is its famous castle, built on a small island near the tip of the peninsula.

The castle, made of brick, dates back to the XV century, but it is perfectly reconstructed. It is one of the best known sights of Lithuania.

    Fishing boats.

Lithuania borders Russia to the West! No, I am not geographically disabled. Actually, it borders the Kaliningrad enclave, located between Poland and Lithuania. This enclave included the southern half of the Curonian Spit. We drove all the way to the border with the hope that friendly officials would let us set foot on that mythic territory. But unfortunately, no visa, no entry.

The lonely road (off the season) crossed a landscape of picturesque fishing boats, deep forests and clouds of mosquitoes.

    Towers of Kaunas

With over 400.000 inhabitants, Kaunas is the second city in Lithuania. It is said that it keeps the real soul of the nation, as Vilnius has been Polish for many centuries and does look much more Central-european than Kaunas. This city was even the capital of the country during the short periode of indepence that followed WWI.

Kanuas is crossed by the river Namunas, the most important in Lithuania, and its historical centre has a significant number of attractions for an enjoyable stay.

Vilnius, with a population of less than 600.000, is the capital and largest city in Lithuania. Located on the river Neris and surrounded by green hills, its historical centre is full of spires, domes and well kept Barroque buildings that reveal the fact that, instead of looking at Northern Germany like the other two Baltic capitals, Vilnius has had Poland and Central Europe as a point of reference.

The atmosphere in Vilnius is laid-back and the night scene rather vibrant by Baltic standards.

This picture shows the church of Saint Anne and the monastery of the Bernardines, one of the most peculiar architectural ensembles in the city of Vilnius.
