Plokðtinë Nuclear Missile Launch Site

by janvanommen

In 1960 more than 10 000 Soviet soldiers started secret works in Þemaitija National Park that took 2 years. Most activities where done during the nights, and even people who lived in the area didn't know what was going on.....The out of the way forest near Plungë was carefully chosen to become a secret base to carry the Soviet Nuclear Weapons. The base was situated here and became famous as a Plokðtinë nuclear missile launch site. The Plokðtinë nuclear missile launch site started operating around three years after it was established. It included 4 silos that took in missiles of the R- 12 U/ SS-4 kind. The missiles at the Plokðtinë nuclear missile launch site were nuclear in nature and propelled using a medium range liquid. They weighed more than 40 tones each and the weight of the warhead was over 1500 kilograms. These surface-to-surface missiles also had a radius of operation of a...

Kryziø Kalnas - Hill of Crosses

by janvanommen

The Hill of Crosses, Kryziø Kalnas, located 12 kilometers north of the small industrial city of Siauliai, is the Lithuanian national pilgrimage center. Standing upon a small hill are many hundreds of thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and a memorial to Lithuanian national identity. The tradition of placing crosses dates from this period and probably first arose as a symbol of Lithuanian defiance of foreign invaders. Since the medieval period, the Hill of Crosses has represented the peaceful resistance of Lithuanian Catholicism to oppression. In 1795 Siauliai was incorporated into Russia but was returned to Lithuania in 1918. Many crosses were erected upon the hill after the peasant uprising of 1831-63. By 1895, there were at least 150 large crosses, in 1914 200, and by 1940 there were 400 large crosses surrounded by thousands of smaller ones. From 1944 until...

Kedainiai - old town in the middle of Lithuania

by Raimix

The first time Kedainiai was mentioned in 1372. In the 16th century city was one of the first involved into the Reformation of church and centre of Lutherans. It was multicultural city - mostly in the first half of 17th century much foreigners immigrated into city - Germans, Scottish, Jewish, Russians, so this could be seen in Kedainiai old town architecture and history. Scottish and Germans were mostly whose, who have ran to Kedainiai seeking better tolerance of Lutherans' religion.Kedainiai city is a geographical center of Lithuania - it is said that about 3 kilometers away from the city is a real center with a monument to it.For further information you could visit my page of Kedainiai.

Druskininkai - resort between pine tree forests

by Raimix

The name of this city was firstly mentioned in 1596. In 1837 Druskininkai got the name of the spa due to mineral waters. It is one of the best resorts in Lithuania. Maybe there are not so much sightseeing, but beautiful nature and good sanatories. City centre is between Nemunas river and Druskonis lake. It is full of sculptures, flowers, parks, lakes. If it looks that Druskininkai is too boring, you could bike to some nice places around (biking routes are made). Recently Aqua park started to work in Druskininkai. It is first Aqua park in Lithuania and is said one of the best in Europe. For further information you could visit my page of Druskininkai.

Kaunas - a son of Nemunas and Neris confluence

by Raimix

When I first time came to Kaunas, my eyes noticed a long long street called Laisves Aleja (Avenue of Freedom). This is a street only for pedestrians, it is a street of a lot of shops, caffes and other atractions. But the main thing why a big number of people go throught this street is a finishing destination - old town. It is worth to see all museums, churches, a confluence of the biggest rivers of Lithuania Nemunas and Neris. A lot of beautiful places I found walking throught narrow Kaunas streets. It doesn't matter what I was in Kaunas a few times - I would come back to Kaunas more times. For further information you could visit my page of Kaunas.

Siauliai - the main town of North Lithuania

by Raimix

Siauliai ir forth largest city of Lithuania, population is about 147 thousands. It could be called the major city of Northern Lithuania – mostly for trade and industry. Actually in regards of tourism, people use Siauliai more for reaching Hill of Crosses, but not city itself. Anyway, city has what to show - Vilniaus avenue, renaissance style Cathedral, nice modern sculptures, examples of Soviet architecture, unique museums.City was firstly mentioned in 1236, as not so far from city the famous “Saules” (Sun’s) battle took place. Here Livonian Order warriors were defeated and intervention to Lithuanian land was stopped for some time. For further information you could visit my page of Siauliai.

Klaipeda

by Leipzig

Klaipeda is Lithuania's only seaport and the third largest town in the country. The town has experienced a very exciting history. Klaideda was founded in the first century AD as a fishing village. The Germans occupied the town and called it Memel. In the middle of the 13th century the castle of Memelburg was erected near the town. In the 17th century Klaipeda was devastated by the Swedish army and in the 18th century by the Russians. Klaipeda became the residence of Prussian Kings for one year after the French army occupied Berlin in 1807. After the defeat of Germany in World War I, the town became administrated by the Frenchs. In 1923 it was handed over to Lithuania. Between 1939 and 1945 Klaipeda was occupied by the Germans and until 1991 by the Soviets.
