Kaunas

by Leipzig

Kaunas has about 450000 inhabitants and is located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. Its history dates back to the year 1361 when it got its city charter. The centre was not damaged in World War Two and still offers visitors its old charm. Outside the centre you see traces of the Soviet occupation - multi-stored buildings and multi-laned express ways.

Travel with the Green Hill Funicular

by janvanommen

The Kaunas Þaliakalnis (Green Hill) funicular was opened in 1931, at the V. Putvinskio gatvë. It was renovated for the first time twenty years ago. At that time passenger platforms were installed, and at the lower station a sculpture was added “Girl with a Reed-Pipe”. Three years ago this funicular was completely renovated, recreating all of its authenticity. At the bottom station ticks an old clock, and the personnel wear post-war uniforms. At the top station of the funicular is the “F Galerija”, which displays various works of art.

Visit the Church of the Resurrection

by janvanommen

When Lithuania regained its independence in 1918, an idea arose in Kaunas, the temporary capital of that time, to build a church in gratitude to God, as a symbol for regained freedom. Several years later, the city government donated a land lot for the construction of the church. The interior of the church was to have been with three naves, a basilica, unsophisticated architecture, laconic, rectangular. The height for the large tower was projected at 70 m., and at the top level there was to have been a chapel for St. Casimir. This house of prayer was to have held 5,000 worshippers. Up to 1940, around 1 million Litas was spent on the construction of the church. Soon the basic construction work was finished, but it was halted by the Soviet occupation. The building was confiscated; after the war it was turned into a radio factory, adjusting the building for the purpose of manufacturing.With...

Visit the Church Of St. Michael The Archangel

by janvanommen

This house of worship was built in 1891-1893. It was meant for the Kaunas stronghold soldiers, as a representational building for the Kaunas Army fortress, expressing luxury and officialdom. This Neobyzantine style house of prayer was consecrated in 1895 giving it the Russian Orthodox title of St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral. Kaunas residents simply call it the “soboras” (Russian Orthodox Cathedral). Once the Sobor was finished, the New Kaunas centre was complete as a city of a military fortress. During World War I, mass was held here for the Evangelical German Army soldiers. In 1919 the Sobor was handed over to the Kaunas military garrison and named St. Michael the Archangel. After World War II a parish was established in the Sobor and it ceased to be the military’s centre of worship. When Soviet ideology became active, from 1962 right up to 1990’s it belonged to a gallery of the Art...

The Hill of crosses

by Tuna_ank

Magnificent place, The Hill of Crosses, Kryziø Kalnas, located 12 kilometers north of the small industrial city of Siauliai is the Lithuanian national pilgrimage center. Standing upon a small hill are many hundreds of thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and a memorial to Lithuanian national identity. The city of Siauliai was founded in 1236 and occupied by Teutonic Knights during the 14th century. The tradition of placing crosses dates from this period and probably first arose as a symbol of Lithuanian defiance of foreign invaders. Since the medieval period, the Hill of Crosses has represented the peaceful resistance of Lithuanian Catholicism to oppression. In 1795 Siauliai was incorporated into Russia but was returned to Lithuania in 1918. Many crosses were erected upon the hill after the peasant uprising of 1831-63. By 1895, there were at least 150 large crosses, in...

Vilnius- Mount Gedymino

by zaffaran

It's a very good idea to reach the top of the hill to have a general idea of the city. Usually there are two ways- on foot following the winding path or by lift. This time the path was closed (partly collapsed after the winter), so we took a lift (cost 2 Lt up nad down- don't forget to keep the ticket otherwise you have problems with your leaving the lift down the hill). Then we went up Gedyminas Tower to make the view even wider.

Go Birdwatching

by bsfreeloader

Due to a diversity of habitats and a relatively healthy ecosystem, the birdwatching is better in the Baltics than in many other places in Europe. Lithuania is no exception, with good birdwatching opportunities throughout the country. Common species such as White Stork, White Wagtail, Mute Swan, and House Martin are impossible to miss, but there are many other interesting species to be seen as well.
