Trakai Castle

by zaffaran

It's a tourist destination not far from Vilnius (28 kilometres), easily accessible by bus or electric train. People come here to see the castle and try Karaim's cuisine. To reach it one should drive (or walk) past the centre along the Karaim Street for . The castle is situated on the island and looks great from the lake side. In fact (although it was built in 15th century, in the late 17th century it was ruined) it's rebuilding was started before WW2 and finished in late 80s of the 20th century. There's a Historical Museum in it.

From SU to EU in 15 years

by CliffClaven

It's hard to imagine that less than 20 years ago Vilnius was a provincial, backwater town somewhere in the Soviet Union. Now, it's the capital of a European country, which joined the European Union in 2004, and it has all the trappings of a national capital: embassies, ministries, elegant buildings, monuments to national heroes. Oh, and it also has a monument to Frank Zappa - which they certainly wouldn't have been allowed to put up in Soviet times.

Vilnius

by A-Friend-Of-Belarus

Vilnius is a nice city, at least the downtown. You can see a lot of churches, mostly Roman Catholic but there are Russian Orthodox ones as well. The suburb area is built in a typical Soviet style so there's no much difference from Minsk or some other (ex) Soviet place, but, again, the downtown is cute. Small and narrow streets full of churches.

A trip to the Mega shopping complex brings a great suprise, as it houses the largest in store aquarium in Europe, great for keeping the kids amused whilst you can shop at your leisure. With 800 species of fish, including sharks it is quite a sight.

Churches

There are many churches in Kaunus but each one is completely different from the last, most have been destroyed by fire at sometime in the past, lots of history goes with these acient buildings. Here are a few photos of my favorite ones.

Blind Museum

by ettenaj

Found under the church at the top end of the predestrianised shopping area. You have to ask once in side the church to see the catacoombs. Be warned, you have to remove your glasses and leave all belongings at the entrance of the catacoombs. You are on your own as you decend on a spiral staircase under the church, and you are locked in from behind.Half way down the stairs there is a black curtain once beyond that ( and still on the stairs ) there is only pitch black, and I mean pitch black. At the bottom of the stairs the floor beneath you is of a sponge consistency that feels quite unsteady as you cannot see what you are standing on. I found a rope which I followed for a few feet then came to a solid wall of sponge, on inspection they was a small split in the sponge for you to sqweeze through, but you couldnt feel what was on the other side. My partner tried to go through but said it...

Hill of crosses

by Niekie

The hill of crosses is one of the most remarkable sites in Lithuania. It has been around since the Middle Ages, evolving from a pagan site of ancestor worshiping to what we can see today: a mound covered with thousands of crosses of different shapes and sizes, placed with great care and reverence. Not only is it a site of Christian devotion, but also a place for the expression of defiance, and remembrance for those who died or were deported during the oppression. In a feeble attempt to rid Lithuania of signs of Catholicism and patriotism the Soviets bulldozed the site several times, only to find it rebuilt by locals in a short time. It’s not hard to imagine how important this site must be to the Lithuanian people and their cultural and national identity. No visit to Lithuania can be complete without visiting the hill of crosses, so don't miss it!
