Row, row, row your boat, gently 'round Trakai...

by Niekie

Surrounded by the waters of Lake Galve, connected to the mainland by a two wooden bridges, sits the island castle of Trakai. Definitely the best way to appreciate its romantic setting is to take a boat around the island to savor the excellent views of the red brick towers and walls of the castle amidst the tranquil water. Though impressive enough on the inside, the best feature of the castle is really its setting so my advice is to make the most of that experience. After Kestutis, father of Vytautas the Great, had started constructions of the castle, it served as an important defensive stronghold against the raiding Teutonic knights. Withstanding the forays of the Teutons, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania reached the height of its power in the fifteenth century under the rule of Vytautas the Great. With the Grand Duchy stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea, Vytautas was in need of a...

Watch the sunset at Palanga

by Niekie

Get away from the fun seeking frenzy of Palanga’s promenade and head for the pier to watch the sun set in the Baltic Sea.In the summer all of Lithuania empties and moves to Palanga, the main beach resort. Driving into town we were greeted by dozens of people standing by the side of the road offering private rooms for rent. But when we came to the centre of town and saw the numbers of people promenading the streets, it was hard to imagine how there could possibly be any room left in Palanga. Basanaviciaus gatve, the pedestrianized heart of the centre, is where most of the action can be found. Singers and bands compete for your attention in the many bars and restaurants lining the street, Bungee-jump-like attractions with screaming people, monkeys and parrots, caricature drawers etc. I think you get the picture. At the western end of the street, you’ll find a pier stretching nearly half a...

Klaipeda, the access to the Sea.

by lotharlerch

This city is far less attractive than Vilnius and Kaunas but clearly unbeatable with respect to its surroundings, in particular Kursiu Nerija, the Couronian Spit. In old times Klaipeda/Memel was long not Lithuania's access to the Sea but blocking it because it was not part of Lithuania. For more see my Klaipeda page!

Kaunas, rival of Vilnius and Capital for 20 years

by lotharlerch

Other than in Latvia and Estonia Lithuania has two more cities of more than 200000 inhabitants, Kaunas and Klaipeda. Kaunas, almost comparable to Vilnius in size was even Capital of Lithuania between the period of the Russian and the Soviet empire, under this time Vilnius was occupied by Poland. For more see my Kaunas page.

Hill of Crosses

by rollinstone81

When I went to the Hill of Crosses the first time it was afternoon on a quite summerday, when I arrived the last tourist group entered the bus, the few souvenir traders were packing their stuff together and I had the entire place for myself. It was terrific, only a couple of times I have seen a place with an atmosphere like this. I set my tent and spend the night there and it was one of the most memorable nights I had. This is definetely a Must See in Lithuania. If you come from Vilnius and wanna go to Riga, if you plan well you can do it on the way. If you have privat transportation then it's no problem.

The curonian spit of Neringa

by crewsada

The spit is 100kms long and has some quaint villages along the way. Only half is occupied by Lithuania - the other by Russia. It is a unique feature and worth a day at least. Ferries from Klaipeda(mainland) take 5 minutes and can transport you by car or bikes, or if you wish, on foot. Bike trails are in several places on the island, and walks up the great dune a t Nida or through the forest on witches hill are pleasant. Nida the largest village there is great for spending an afternoon eating smoked fish or visiting the museum of Thomas Mann(nobel prize writer) . As are many markets and fish kiosks worth seeing also.

Trakai

by Carletto76

Trakai is the most famous "resort" close to Vilnius. There you will find not only the castle (mostly rebuilt and not much interesting), but a very beautiful landscape made of countriside and lakes, with small, old wooden houses, all colourful and picturesque. You can sail, you can go rowing, maybe you can also swim! Don't expect much from the castle, I think It's even not worth to see inside, but just go around the lake shores and enjoy the idilliac landscape of Trakai!Oh, and Trakai is also the land of "Karaites", a different, and almost disappeared, form of Judaism.Take a look at my page about Trakai
