Neringa (Curonian Spit)

by Carletto76

The Kursiu Nerija National Park (Curonian Spit, in English) is probably the most interesting and beautiful naturalistic place you will see in the Baltic area. A UNESCO World Heritage place, set between the Baltic sea and the Curonian lagoon; a thin land long about 50Km from Klaipeda to the Kaliningrad Region (Russia) border, all to see (possibly with a car) and to live! And then, at its end, Nida, the nicest village there, with its old wooden houses, so liked by Herr Thomas Mann!Take a look at my page about Neringa

Klaipeda

by Carletto76

Klaipeda is the Lithuanian gateway to the Baltic sea, and also to the Curonian Spit National Park. It's totally different from Vilnius or Kaunas, here the German (Prussian) influence is still very high, and you can see it in architecture, though much of the town has been unfortunately destroyed during WWII.Klaipeda is a quiet town and the best base point to explore the Curonian Spit, but it's also worth a visit to imagine how the German "Memel" looked like in the past.Take a look at my page about Klaipėda

Kaunas

by Carletto76

Kaunas is the 2nd biggest town in Lithuania, and there is a great rivalry with Vilnius! Maybe it's mostly because of basketball teams, but Kaunas people seems to be really proud of their town rounded by water! It hasn't a big historic centre as Vilnius, and a lot of restoration is still to be done, but Kaunas is another lively town with plenty to see and really a lot of young people who study and live there. You cannot miss it! ;-)Take a look at my page about Kaunas

Vilnius

by Carletto76

Of course Vilnius is the most famous place in Lithuania, as well as the capital city. And you really cannot miss it! It maybe is the least famous of the 3 Baltic capitals, but probably is the one I like most! Yes, there are many tourists, but it's a live city thanks to Lithuanian people who live there and love to live there! There are so many places to see there, and the best way is to go around the dedalus of small streets of the old town. I spent there just 2 days and every time I went to the centre I found some new interesting spots. And don't forget about the Uzupio Res Publika!Take a look at my page about Vilnius

You must participate in a feast

by aistute

You must visit Lithuanians beaches in the end of July or in the begining of August. The weather is ussually great. I personally recomend Coronian spit beaches because they are almost untouched by civilization. At that time the huge See Feast takes place in Klaipeda. It is a huge feast which attracts more than million people. Everyone is invited and welcomed. You can do whatever you want throughout all week.In such city as Klaipeda you can find every kind of activity you want. And don't forget to taste Lithuanian beer...

Trakai Castle

by grets

Trakai Island Castle is open 10.00 - 17.00 ans is accessible from a wooden footbridge. It has been restored to its former glory afetr being ruined in the 17th century. Soem may not agree with the blatent reconstruction, others take delight in seeing what it would have looked like in its heyday. The thick outer walls are flanked by massive towers and there are caements all around the inner courtyard.

Trakai

by grets

A small town with a mere 7,000 people, Trakai has nevertheles played an important part in Lithuanian history. One of Lithuania's oldest towns, dating back to the 12th century, it was the capital of the country for a while. The streets are lined with colourful wooden houses, a leagcy from the Karaite settles. The Karaite sect was founded in the 8th century and in 1441 they were granted the right to administer their own affairs. They retained their own faith, language and identity. Now believed to number less than 300 with a great fear that they may die out within a generation, their legacy live on the form of these 'three-window-houses'. There is a Karaite Museum at Karaimu 22, depicting the life of the community with a collection of military paraphernalia, historic photographs, books, costumes, textiles and household goods.

Hill of Crosses

by grets

Reading about the Hill of Crosses in Siauliai, the story captivated me to such an extent that I built this entire trip to Lithuania around it. Legend tells of a wooden fortress used for pagan worship, but the first cross was allegedly placed here in the Middle Ages. Several crosses were erected in memory of the insurgents killed in 1831 in the conflict with the Tsars, then again after the failed revolt in 1864. Then during the 1950, Lithuanians returning from the Siberian gulags began erecting crosses to honor their frinds and family who had perished in exile. Although bulldozed by the Soviets in 1961 for representing Christianity, the crosses mysteriously reappeared every morning, in ever-increasing numbers.Since the fall of communism, the place has taken on a sacred air and pilgrims add new crosses daily. There are said to be in excess of 100,000 crosses here at present.Stalls in the...

Iron Wolf

by grets

According to legend, Vilnius was founded in 1323 by Grand Duke Gediminas, who decided to camp down where he was after being out hunting all day, rather than return to his castle in Kaunas. During the night he had a strange dream about an iron wolf on a hill, howling as loud as 100 wolves. The dream was intepreted by a pagan priest who recommended Gediminas to build a city where he heard the wolf and that this city would become world renowned as its fame spread with the force of the howls of a hunderd wolves.
