Mini buses
Brilliant service for easy access around town, frequent running approx 30p per journey no matter how far, just flag the appropriate bus down. Each route has a different number displayed in large numbers on the front for easy detection.

Crowded but frequent and inexpensive, the city buses and trolleys are a great way to get around and also experience the locals' routines and daily life... Lines 1 and 2 serve the airport of Vilnius and will bring you (from/to) there in less than half an hour. You can buy the ticket from the driver on board, under 2 L.

Frequent flights operate between Vilnius or Kaunas and most European capitals. There are no direct flights between Lithuania and North America, Australia and Asia. Vilnius airport is 5km (3mi) south of the city centre, in the suburb of Kirtimai, while Kaunas airport is 10km (6mi) north of the Old Town.Buses are the cheapest but least comfortable method of reaching Lithuania, with direct buses from Belarus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Poland, Russia and Sweden. The buses between Poland and Belarus and Lithuania are notoriously subject to long delays: motorists have had to queue for as long as four days at the border between Ogrodniki, Poland and Lazdijai. Lithuanian border guards are pretty nonchalant nowadays. They don't bother stamping passports and have even been known to smile. The Berlin-St Petersburg train passes through Vilnius. If coming from Poland, you can take a...
In some old style places you can find some interesting things ...like this wooden cart : )dont worry we also have buses ,trains ,cars too...:)This year, in Vilnius, i also saw two stored bus for the tourist trips around the town.Quite new thing here.Should be very nice to see all renovated and restored Vilnius old town ;)

Direct train from Poland to LithuaniaThe famous Suwalki - Sestokai route's glory has passed. Once daily service from Warsaw to Sestokai, with connecting train to Vilnius via Kaunas from there was cancelled since Dec. 13th, 2004 and from this time forth will go only during the summer - (30 Apr - 2 Oct). The night train between Poland and LIthuania is cancelled. Instead, PKP Intercity offers the bus connection...

We have three airports: Vilnius airport (I call it 'welcome to the hell' ...but it's not that bad :)). Kaunas airport (Karmelava) and Palanga airport. Also - buses, trains, cars, and bicycles if you're into cycling.Eastern part of Lithuania - beautiful lakes e.g. Moletai region. One of the lakes in the picture. tranportation : we have good system of buses and minivans.Rail is quite ok, but if I had to choose between bus and train - bus would have more advantages, naturally, the best option is a car. Hitchiking is legal. To some places you'll need to use a ferry.

By car from Poland - the situation at the frontier has clearly improved - and from Latvia. Lithuania was almost the last country in Europe to recognize the Green Insurance Card (which was earlier recognized even by countries like Albania and Moldova(!!))Bus is better than train from Latvia and maybe also from Poland. Ferries from Kiel and Mukran in Germany and also from Denmark and Sweden, all going to Klaipeda, the only one seaport. International airport: Vilnius. The road network is far better than I expected it, a good motorway is connecting Vilnius with Kaunas and the coast and most of the main North-South connection is an Autobahn, too. Busses are far more frequent than trains. An interesting option is the speedboat from Kaunas down the Nemunas river and over the lagoon to Nida on the Couronian Spit, but check whether it is still running becaus they used old Soviet boats for that.
Just took a recent trip on the overnight train from Warsaw (Poland) to Kaunas (Lithuania) - Same train goes all the way to Vilnius. Some items that may be helpful:1. Cost - For my wife and I to get the entire 3 person sleeper cabin to ourselves cost us approx $138 US total buying in Poland. Buying the return ticket in Lithuania to Warsaw only cost us about $115 US. Was Strange the cost was a little less, but no arguments were had.2. Sleeper Cabin - Trip to Lithuania was decent. It was pretty cold in the cabin and heat was unable to be changed since the knob was stuck. Return trip was wonderful. We could adjust the heat ourselves and we were quite comfy. Plenty of blankets in the sleeper to keep warm.3. Customs - Trip To Lithuania (about 2-3am )We were woken once with Polish and Lithuanian customs side by side. Quick check and swipe of the passports and within 10 minutes were back asleep....
Forget your car, insurance is seldom applicable in Lithuania and your international green card has no value here. It is definitely cheaper to come by bus (Eurolines) or by plane (Lithuanian Airlines), use taxis in Vilnius (see tourist traps!) and rent a car to Rimas...If you decide to use our car anyway, then there is a nice way from Europe, avoiding the mess of Polish roads. Take the German highways to Kiel, then the Lithuanian ferries to Klaipeda (2 nights, 1 day Baltic cruise) and you have then the perfect lithuanian ways (Highway 300 km from Klaipeda to Vilnius). This way of coming is popular here but do not forget taking an insurance in Lithuania. In Vilnius in Your Pocket you will find the phone number of Rimas rent a car (+370 698) 21662 email rimas.cars@is.lt... no concurrence possible except if you like new cars, then try Litinterp. Send an email to Rimas and he will answer...
Lithuanian trains are slow and have really few connections among towns. So they are really not the best choice to go around the country.Anyway they are ok to go to Lithuania from Poland; there's an overnight train from Warszawa to Vilnius (through Kaunas) which is very comfortable, though not so cheap, but surely it's easier to sleep there rather than on a bus.
