Buses

by Carletto76

The best way to travel around Lithuania is by bus. There are really many of them leaving from Vilnius and Kaunas bus-stations, going almost anywhere around the country. They are quite cheap, maybe not always very modern, but functional.Going by car could be better, but it is said to be quite dangerous because of thieves, expecially in Kaunas.

Excellent, dirt cheap bus network

by RB_Oakes

Normally, I prefer train travel, but the buses in Lithuania were great. First, they cost next to nothing. I think the most expensive trip I had was 15 litas, and that was from Siauliai to Riga. That's about $7.00 CDN, if that. Connections are frequent, even to out of the way places like Pakruojis. A couple were too hot due to lack of access to the outside air, but overall I had some wonderful, lazy country rides.

Trains to Poland

by diamond7

There are only two daily trains going directly to Poland :- Vilnius 12h35 - Kaunas 14h00 - Warszawa 22h28- Vilnius 20h58 - Kaunas 22h25 - Warszawa 05h53 Anyway, I recommend the train that departs at 20h58, as it is a sleeper train. After all, in the other one, you must change of train in Sestokai, with a forced stop of 1 hour !.

By car

by DanielF

We hired a car, so we never used public transportation in Lithuania. Roadas are, in general, in good state, even in remote areas; but this is not a general rule. Although for the most part, they were paved, a few of the roads we drove in were full of holes. There is a motorway that connects the three main cities of the country: from Klaipeda to Vilnius via Kaunas. Vilnius is also connected by motorway with Panevezys, in the North of the country.Drivers are careful and respectful and there is not a lot of traffic, even in the cities, so driving is very enjoyable in Lithuania.

Roads

by Sonic747

Roads in Lithuania are very good, especially if compared with other Eastern Europe. Two main highways are built - A1 (Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipëda) and A2 (Vilnius-Paneveþys), also there are portions of highways elsewhere. Smaller roads are also of good quality and frequently repaired. In winter, they are washed and sand is being put on them, so you may drive (although having winter tires is still recomended - cars should have them if you rent them here). All roads in Lithuania are free. Speed limits:Major highways (at least 4 lane, wide divided highways): 130 km/h in summer, 110 km/h in winterOther highways (4 lane not necesarily wide divided highways): 110 km/h in summer, 100 km/h in winterMain roads (2 lane): 90 km/hInside city limits: 50 km/hPolice may stop you if you are going too fast, although in some municipalities (Vilnius for instance) there is no traffic police checking speed in...

Railways

by Sonic747

Railways are cheap, but aren't the best means of travelling around Lithuania (unless money is the most important thing for you). Schedules are in most cases not very frequent, railways are not everywhere and also in most rails speed is limited to 80km/h, thus the journey will be longer than with bus. Railways probably isn't the best mean to get into Lithuania either - because of different gauges in Lithuania (broad gauge) and Western Europe (normal gauge) train will stop to change wheels before entering Lithuania, also in most cases it will cross a portion of Belarus (if it is coming from Poland) and thus Belorussian transit visa will be needed. This is because railway was built in Soviet Russian occupation times and the Belarus and Lithuania was parts of single country.

Air Lithuania

by Sonic747

A subsidary of Lithuanian Airlines, operating from Kaunas (Karmëlava International Airport) and Palanga. Uses ATR-42 planes. Most of flights are operated from Kaunas via Palanga, you can enter the plane in both cities. Ground connections are available to Kaliningrad (Russia), VIlnius and some other cities.

Lithuanian Airlines

by Sonic747

Lithuanian Airlines operates flights mostly from Vilnius airport, but also from Palanga in summer. Code used in flight numbers is TE. It uses only western-built planes by now which are very comfortable and has good leg space. There are Boeing 737-500, Boeing 737-200 (only for charter routes) and SAAB-2000 planes in use. You can buy tickets on the internet or contact airline representives in your country (look for local contacts on their website). This is the biggest airline in Baltic States and definitely very good, but it is quite expensive also. As chiefs of airline notes themselves, their prime market is bussines travelers.
