Town of Didziasalis, at the extreme eastern end of Lithuania, near Byelorussian border, is perhaps the poorest place in the country. If you want to know how Byelorussian or Russian province towns looks, but don't have visas or don't want to go to the countries themselves, you might be interested in visiting Didziasalis. Not only the economical situation reminds the mentioned countries here: great percent of town's population are of Russian or Byelorussian origin. Didziasalis once was a small village. However, Soviet government decided to build a brick factory here, and together with it many new dormitories for workers were built. Workers were mostly of Russian and Byelorussian origin. After collapse of Soviet Union, brick factory because of old outdated technology used went bankrupt, and thus people lost jobs, some of them moved back to Russia or Byelorussia. Empty flats were bought by certain companies, which then offered these flats to people of major cities in exchange to their flats of homes - of course, the companies would also pay the difference of cost. Many people dependant on alcohol and such agreed with this offer - they moved to Didziasalis and for the money they've got they bought more alcohol. This made the town a hellhole of Lithuania - currently 78% of town's people doesn't has any jobs, 80% lives of welfare, most of them are alcoholics and doesn't even seeks them, crime is high, many children doesn't goes to school. Town takes 30% of welfare budget of Ignalina regional municipality, where it is. Leave a Comment

Siaurukas - narrow gauge railway by Sonic747 Lithuanian narrow gauge railway (750 mm gauge, commonly called "Siaurukas") is over 100 years old, it is built in XIX century. Formerly it operated on transport basis, but now it is only for tourists. There are very good sights from narrow-gauge trains, also stations, bridges which shows architecture and technology of XIX age. In Utenos Apskritis, the best place to start your journey might be in Rubikiai, end of Siaurukas line. It goes to Anyksciai and then to Panevezys from there. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the line is now closed, it won't be possible to experience the feeling as inside some old train as wide as tram going through small cities with local people inside. Getting a ride might be hard - now it operates only as a charter service. On some occations however, special rides are done - usually those also include some events like "robbers" supposedly attacking plane as such incidents were common when Siaurukas was opened over 100 years ago. Tauragnas lake from air by Sonic747 Tauragnas is the deepest lake in Lithuania. It's form (as visible in the picture nearby) is like most of deep lakes, which formed when parts of earth moved from each other this way forming deep pits. Baikal lake, deepest in the world, formed the same way. Depth of Tauragnas is over 60 meters - it's lenght is 9,5 km and width only about 500 meters, thus from air, as in this picture, it might even seem as a river. Several villages are around Tauragnas lake, also hydrometeorogical station operates nearby. Leave a Comment
