In Varėna you can get:
1) By the car.
From Vilnius go by A4 road and look at the signs VARĖNA
From Kaunas go by road 130 (Road to Alytus) then go by 128 and 127 roads. Look at the signs Alytus and Varėna
From Klaipėda go by A1 road to Kaunas and then go like from Kaunas
From Gardin (Belarus) go to Lithuania (Druskininkai). Go directly by road A4 (near Merkinė turn to the right)
2) By the plane.
Find the plain to Lithuania (Vilnius or Kaunas) and then use car or train
3) By the train.
Vilnius - Varėna - Marcinkonys Train from Vilnius everyday. For schedules look in www.litrail.lt or in Vilnius train station
4) By the bus
Druskininkai - Liškiava (very nice place) - Merkinė - Varėna
Vilnius - Eišiškės - Varėna
Utena - Varėna - Druskininkai
Kaunas - Alytus - Varėna

If you wanna see Varena city, you need to take bus Vilnius-Varena or Vilnius-Druskininkai as well. It will take you to Varena station. Of course, the best way is to go by car, as you can easily make off-the-beaten path places when - on the road Vilnius-Varena you can turn to some old authentic Southern Lithuanian villages and see "Pirciupiai mother" monument for the victims of natzis.
