Svyturys Ekstra by HORSCHECK Svyturys is a popular beer brand in Lithuania. The brewery is located in Klaipeda and was established in 1784. They produce various sorts of beer like wheat beer (Baltas), dark beer (Baltijos) and of course lager beer (Ekstra). Nowadays Svyturys is owned by Baltic Beverages Holding which is controlled by the Carlsberg breweries. On my trip through Lithuania I tried a few Lithuanian beers and I must admit that Svyturys Ekstra was among my favourites. Leave a Comment

100 Litas note by HORSCHECK Although Lithuania joined the European Union (EU) on the 1st of May 2004, they don't have the Euro as currency. Lithuania's currency is still the Litas. 1 Litas is divided into 100 Centai. You can get your money with your credit or debit card from cash points or just by exchanging your local money at one of the bureaux de change. Leave a Comment

The painting of Our Lady, Mother of Mercy, at Gates of Dawn has been an object of pilgrimage for centuries. The cult began after the Muscovite invasion on Vilnius in 1655. The first - timber -chapel which was erected to house the picture burnt down around 1711 but the painting was saved by a young monk. It was kept for 20 years in St Theresa's church but then moved to a new brick chapel. When in 1799, under the order of the Tzar, the town walls were demolished, the Gates of Dawn remained intact. The invocation in Mickiewicz's epic poem 'Master Tadeusz' published in 1834 brought the painting even more fame and contributed to the cult spreading not only in Lithuania but also abroad. During the partitions of Poland it was at the Gates of Dawn that patriotic demonstrations took place. The cult became part of the Polish independence movement. In 1919 a procession of scientists, students and state and church figures arrived at the Gates to thank Our Mother of Mercy for the re-opening of Vilnius University. The painting was crowned before Vilnius Cathedral in 1927 in a magnificent ceremony attended by the papal nuncio and the Polish heads of state. During World War II thousands of the faithful came to pray at the Gates of Dawn for peace and independence. Even in Soviet times, when many of the churches in Vilnius were turned into stores or just shut down, the Gates of Dawn remained open. Leave a Comment

Typical TOURISTS by Sexy_European This time I want to talk about the BEHAVIOR of the tourist. This is a biggie, bigger than clothing. If you look like you're a real hard core traveler, with the whole gear and everything, you're putting yourself in vulnerable position. HELLO, what the hell are you thinking?????? THe DONT'S in Vilnius 1. Don't look like a ritch idiot tourist with your high-tech cameras and techmnology out. They will get stolen 2 Don' t wear backpacks to the city. (Unless you're a 10 year old kid!!!) SO Not Lithuanian! 3. Do not take out your mile long map of Vilnius in the middle of the street, do this at the hotel, restaurant etc.. It you're lost better ask people. 4. Don't wear your camera on a strap on a chest, (locals would never wear cameras like this!!!!) 5. Do not start arguing or shouting in your language to the locals for whatever reason (you will get strange looks, be ignored and get nowhere, remember you represent your country) 6. Don't look lost. Try to blend in. If you get lost ask for directions. Leave a Comment

We came across this bridge by chance, only because a helpful man (well, a little drunk as well, but helpful anyway) who had approached us in the cafe in Uzupis showed us a 'secret passage' that let us make a short cut to St Anne's. So, instead of going down Uzupio St we turned right at the Angel of Uzupis into a covered passage (there was some construction work going on) and went down Malunu St to a bridge on the Vilnele. And here we got a surprise. The wrought iron barrier of the bridge was covered all over with.... padlocks. They were all locked, some were rusty from the elements but all firmly attached to the barrier. We thought it rather strange at first but on closer inspection we saw inscriptions on the padlocks - a boy's and a girl's names, a date and perhaps a picture of a heart. Some even had a picture of a young couple engraved by laser. The keys were not there so we suppose the newly-weds must have dropped them into the river in the belief that this will make their marriage last forever. Good luck to them! Leave a Comment

by Carletto76 I found this very nice sign just beside the orthodox church of the Apparition of the Holy Mother of God (Znamenskaya), and liked it at once! ;-) Don't you like it? I'm sorry to say that sooner or later you'll have to buy one (or someone will have to buy one for you, which is worse!), so if that happens while you are in Vilnius you know where to go! ;-))) Leave a Comment

Irma & Grazina by Grazina My first daylight "DAY" (9/19/2003). We were on our way to having a good lunch somewhere in the area of the Main Street (Gedimino Avenue) and the Cathedral. But this was the first site that was familiar to me. With all the research I did in the last two years of this beautiful country...seeing things on paper and in black and white...is nothing to what the feeling is like when you see it in person, the feeling of accomplishment and I have arrived! The front room of Irma's apartment by Grazina The people of Lithuania are very loving and caring people...but it does take awhile to get to know them...and once you have the patients to allow yourself the time and effort you have a friend for life ;o)) I was lucky enough to be housed by 2 Lithuanian girls that I met back in 1999 at Page America. It took me 4 years to reconnect person to person or face to face, BUT want a reunion. I missed my girls (I'm their Navajo Auntie). I gave them my clan (Towering House people), and gave them Navajo names...Irma I named Nizhoni' (Beautiful), because not only did I see beauty on the exterior, but I also saw inner beauty as well. Grazina I named Shash Yazhi (Teddy Bear), because with her I saw gentle and sweetness plus innocents. The picture shows them with gifts I brought back from the "REZ". The food you see on the table was prepared for me that 1st night in Vilnius...As^tave myliu Mergaites. Leave a Comment

by Carletto76 Thanks again to my Lithuanian friend Raimix now we know what there's written on this sign: "who will create the future of Lithuania tomorow?! Be political active". So it's not a political party sign, but it's an invitation to Lithuanian people to partecipate more in active politics. It seems that few Lithuanians are interested in politics, and few people go to vote, which is not good in a Democracy, so dear Lithuanian friends, go to vote at elections! ;-) Of course it's not a Soviet sign, but it remembered me of old propaganda signs of the USSR...
