Miscellaneous: On my travels to Eastern and Central Europe I always try to get myself the latest edition of the "In Your Pocket" guide.

These guides are very up to date, provide useful maps and offer all sorts of practical information for independent travels. Most of the tips can also be found on their webpage.

Lithuania is the cradle of "In Your Pocket" as the the first guide was published in Vilnius in 1991. Their office is located at Vokieciu 10-15 right in the heart of the Old Town.

Lonely Planet Guide: Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania

Miscellaneous: The Baltic States are rapidly developing countries, therefore an up to date guidebook is very helpful.

On my trips to teh Baltics I used the Lonely Planet Guide "Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania" which offers information for all budgets on what to see and do, and tips on dining and accomodation. Vilnius is described on more than 30 pages in this guide.

    Beautiful buildings of Vilnius

Luggage and bags: *Luggage on wheels is the best !!!!

*Less in more! Don't take your whole damn wardrobe here, you can buy everything you need and more here,.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: 1.Heels are not recommended, because you will break you feet walking in these beautiful coblestone streets. Even thou Lithuanian women seem to wear them (don't know how!)
    2. NO SNEAKERS (ewww nobody wears them in europe only americans seem to.)
    3. Bring an umbrella, it rains here a lot.
    4. Also you need a sweater, it gets cold even in summer.
    5. If you're coming in winter you need to buy the warmest coat you can find fur preffered or something super insulated. You haven't experienced winter untill you have seen Lithuanian winters (SOOOO cold)
    6. In general dress nice here, because everybody does here! You will look ridiculous in shorts, sneackers and a tee.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: * You can buy whatever you need here, don't need to bring shampoos, shaving gel, etc...
    * If you need basic toiletries go to a big supermarket like "RIMI ir "MAXIMA", also there's a cosmetics store "SARMA" in old town for makeup, shampoos., etc..
    3. If you need non prescription drugs (or prescription) like an aspirin, band-aids, look for a sign "VAISTINE". It means drug store. They're everywhere in old town.

Photo Equipment: * DOn't bring you huge cameras and wear them on a strap on your chest. IT's like a huge sign that you're a tourist. Smaller ones are better!

Luggage and bags: It is good to have a little dictionary of Lithuanian words. It is really really fantastic to hear some lithuanian words from tourists' lips.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Just see a forecast before going to Vilnius. All weather conditions is changing slowly.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Don't miss insurance and all will be Ok!

Photo Equipment: Bring a good photo camera to make photos in Vilnius.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: You will rent all equipment you need

Miscellaneous: Bring a good mood to Vilnius!

    Weather, walking shoes, a tripod...

    by matcrazy1 Updated Jul 10, 2004

    CATHEDRAL AND BELL TOWER

Luggage and bags: For walking around Vilnius, small, city backpack and surely bag for your camera - both water-proof.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Comfortable walking shoes preferrably water-resistant: like good trainers or better special walking shoes (one example: Danish Ecco are very comfortable and... expensive but worth the cost).
Sun-glasses esp. in winter and summer and always a rain coat, eventually less comfortable umbrella.

Read info on climate in Lithuania:
    Climate of Lithuania
Average temperatures and rainfall in... Kaunas (100 km west of Vilnius):
    WorldClimate Kaunas

Check weather (10-day forecast) for Vilnius:
    Weather forecast for Vilnius

Photo Equipment: Take as many films as you can or as large memory card as you can - Vilnius offers a lot for photography lovers :-). For pictures at night and/or bad light (weather) take a tripod.

Miscellaneous: Do not forget to take BIG SMILE :-) Enjoy!

When it goes to the packing of things...

Luggage and bags: I think that you can find almost everything you need in Vilnius, so you don't need to bring all your things with you. Of course, if you need something extra or special, then maybe it'll be better to take it with you.

    Assorted stuff

    by Canadian_girl Updated Apr 30, 2003

Luggage and bags: Make sure you bring electrical converters and / or adaptors if you need them, because you won't find any here. The plugs are the same as in Western Europe (2 round prongs) and the electricity is 220v.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Sidewalks here are scary and dangerous, full of cracks and holes. I know the local girls wander around in stiletto heels 12 months of the year, but don't you even think about trying it! Make sure to bring sensible, comfortable shoes for walking.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring earplugs! There is a constant racket from car alarms.

Photo Equipment: Film is much more expensive here than we North Americans are accustomed to, so make sure to bring a lot of it with you.

Miscellaneous: If you can't live without your morning bagel, make sure to bring it with you. I haven't found bagels yet and am going into withdrawal. Although they do have cream cheese here, which kinda makes me wonder what they put it on... ?

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Vilnius cosmopolitan city, any bags, any clothes will do! take a comfortable one.

Miscellaneous: Special advice: when you come, go to a bookshop and buy “Vilnius in Your pocket”, it will cost about 1$ here and believe me, you’ll know much more and will be able to explore whatever your heart desires.

Gates of Dawn in the picture.

(Obviously you can get some cache from the local ATM’s and banks)

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Good reliable footwear. Vilnius is very hilly and public transport is not really an option in the city centre.
