Don't Touch the Produce

by eurfirst

We were pleasantly surprised by the way Europeans treated their fresh fruits and vegetables. In most places, you should not handle fresh produce with your bare hands. If you are shoppping at a market, tell the farmer what you'd like and let the farmer put it in the bag for you. Most farmers will take the time to give you their best produce so it isn't necessary for you to select your own fruits and vegetables. If you are in a grocery store, look around the produce section to find disposable gloves. You only need one for the hand that will touch the fresh produce. It is also good to remember that while vendors are willing to give you samples, they are usually farmers and small producers with much smaller marketing budgets than Costco. Be polite and only take samples of items you are truly tempted to buy.

Dining is much slower

by Robin922

Unlike the American culture where we eat and run. Dining is an experience to enjoy. With several countries under by belt, I’ve found this to a common denominator. If you want to eat and run you must go to a place that caters to ‘take away’ (“to go” is not used) like McDonalds. Local dining places will be at a much slower pace, allow no less than 30 minutes for breakfast, an hour for lunch and two to three hours for dinner. Also don’t expect the server to be hovering over you. It isn’t bad service, but allowing you to enjoy your meal without interruption. If you need something, just catch their eye and polity ask for what is needed. You will also have to ask for the check. BTW I don't suggest it, but have noticed there is a McDonalds in every country I've been to!

You will be carrying your own bags!

by Robin922

As a rule, skycaps and bellhops are rare! Be ready to drag your luggage around. The good news is that terminals and some hotels will have free carts to ease the pain. However, unless you take a cab the odds are you will be dragging and loading your own luggage to, on and off the shuttles, trams, or trains.Good news, you don’t have to tip. ;-)

Tipping

by Robin922

Doing tips for a general area and not a particular county isn’t easy. For each country will have it’s own customs. However the general rule is tip included when you eat. With that said, I have found no objection to leaving a 10% tip when the service has been exceptional.

Restrooms

by juniperjune

One important tip about restrooms in Europe is that you have to pay to gain entrance. I was first taken back by this, but they are extremely clean and safe. Most of the restroom stalls have doors that go all the way to the floor. You can put your bag or purse on the floor without fear someone will steal it, as there is no room from the bottom for someone to reach under. As well, they are so clean you have no reservations of putting your bag on the floor! One bathroom in Italy had a self-cleaning toilette! I was amazed by this, I need one for my house. As you flush, the toilette seat rotates and is automatically cleaned!!! That was worth 50 cents, let me tell you! I flushed 3 times, as I was amazed by it!

Bulgaria Yes/No

The glorious man with his crazy dream, a man a leader a lover, but still a big criminal, Napoleon in spite of all was the direct reason for the death of 1 million French soldiers and for nothing! Not mentioning the victims from countries he tried to capture, in a funny way this is the biggest dictator in France and French time, but many French people are real fans of him!
