This castle is massive with its 85 m length and 30 m width. The original walls are from the 10th/11th century. There were different additions over the centuries and in 1820 king Wilhelm I auctionned it off for destruction.

In the castle you will find a museum and the you can visit the castle all year round from 10 am till
    6 pm.

You may want to visit the tourist office to get a map etc. Next to the tourist office (on the river side) there are public toilets.

Here you can also buy tickets for the little tourist train that runs along the street.

Opening times of the tourist office is:
    Monday to Friday 8 - 12 / 13 - 17
    Saturday/Sunday 10 - 14

Inside the church is most amazing due to the double nave and its altars. In the left side is the Renaissance altar "Blessed Sacrament" from the workshop of the the famous Ruprecht Hoffmann of Trier. It dates back to the 15th century.

The main altar on the right side is from about 1758 and made by local artists. There are numerous tombs underneath the church. The organ is from 1693.

    Rathaus

This pretty building is not easy to photograph on a weekend when the place is packed with day trippers as it has a large parking lot in front of it. Also on that square is a funny fountain and some weather gadget.

The building was first mentioned in 1469. Later two noble families possessed it. In 1950 it became the Rathaus. The present shape mostly dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

The monastery of the Trinitarian order was founded in 1248 and the cloister belonged to them. Emperor Joseph II of Austria closed the monastery and cloister in 1783. The premises were auctioned off and eventually fell in decline. After 1955 the cloister was restored.

Originally there was a chapel in this spot. The order of Templar built and extended this church in the 13th century. A fire partly destroyed the church in 1723, but already a year later it was rebuilt. The baroque altar with rococo elements is from 1768.

This chapel dates back to 1761 and was originally an asylum for the homeless. On the lower floor it was at times used as a school room. It can still be used for the homeless these days. The chapel with altar was closed when we were there.

I didn't spend time in the town itself. Who would, when there is this awe-inspiring castle to explore! What struck me about this fortress, was that it really did seem to maintain its character as a serious military garrison. The chapel, the, noble quarters, these all seemed to be fairly Spartan. Looking out the windows, or looking up fromthe ground, something about the Vianden Castle is just so very functional. I have to say, they did a phenomenal job restoring the place. Its not 100% finished, but they have done and are doing a superb job. This is one castle worth seeing.

Impossible to miss, this imposing edifice towers over the town and the valley. Its oldest elements dating back to the 11th century, the castle today belongs to the State of Luxemburg and is open to the public. I doubt it is wheelchair-accessible though -- can't say for sure as the steep hill already had a very deterring effect on me ;)

    lovely house on the riverfront
    by RhineRoll
Vianden essentially has three points of focus. The first and most obvious one would be the castle. The second not much less obvious is the lovely riverfront to both sides of the bridge. Most of Vianden's pretty houses and corners are actually situated on the left bank of the Our, where the main street goes uphill towards the castle in pretty much the same fashion a snail's house is wrapping itself around the snail . For best views of the castle, keep going along this main road until it starts becoming a hairpin road and leaves the town.
