    Parking in Luxembourg
    1 more image

Unfortunately parking your car in Luxembourg's city centre can be very difficult and also very expensive.

Especially short term on street parking during weekdays is almost impossible.

Multistory car parks charge incredible high fees, not only on weekdays.

Be prepared to pay at least 16 Euro per day in a normal car park.

A free of charge alternative on weekends and public holidays is the car park "Glacis" which has more than 1200 parking spaces. The car park "Glacis" is located about 1,2 km northwest of the city centre.

    The city layout and traffic.

by ATLC Written Apr 3, 2005

Luxembourg is built on several hills. Therefore the traffic stream is often one way and a bit complicated because you may find yourself not going the direction you want to if you are by car. But don't fear, the city is small, if you retrace you can easily take the right turn when you find the same spot again.

    Walking

by ATLC Written Apr 4, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Free maps, like on the website below, can be found at hotels and hostels. So you can take one with you when you set off to explore the city. Because of the hills, the walking can be quite steep sometimes. So take good shoes if you want to walk comfortably.

    Unpredictable weather

by acemj Updated May 20, 2006

The mercurial skies above Luxembourg City can go from sun splotched to cloud soaked in a matter of minutes, so be prepared with an umbrella or other appropriate rain gear. A sudden storm can also bring about a dramatic drop in temperature here, so it's a good idea to layer your clothes and bring along a coat.

I took this picture from underneath an old arch in the Old Town because I got caught in a sudden rain shower while trying to walk down the hill toward the lower town (the Grund). I waited it out here with a local couple for twenty minutes before the rain let up.

    TAKE A BATH OR SHOWER

OK. Listen her mister. Notice I am only referring to guys. You are on your holidays. Fair enough – don’t shave. It hurts, you get cut, who needs that? You just got dressed in (I hope) clean clothes. What did we forget? You think the rest of humanity won’t notice? Let me tell you cold days (bad) or warm/hot days (much worse) you are a stinky bastard and we can ALL smell you and you smell like ***

Now, I have a habit of shouting very loudly in public:

“HEY! SMELLY BASTARD! WHY DO YOU STINK SO BAD?! WHY DID YOU NOT TAKE A BATH TODAY?! THEY HAVE WATER AND FREE SOAP AT YOUR HOTEL!”

Now I travel a lot and I have travelled to over 90 countries. Before you even THINK about making bathing optional because you don’t have to work this week – just remember 1 thing.

I will be waiting for you in a public place.

    Clean it up mister!

    MOTORING OFFENCES

Driving to/around Luxembourg? It may be small but they have a good-sized and active Police service. Pictured are the Police happily placing a big fat fine on an illegally parked car and the motorcycle Police pulling over a speeding car and giving the driver another big fat fine. Parking in the capital is very strictly controlled. Park in underground car parks or, you guessed it, pay big fat fines. Ouch!

There are trains from Brussels almost every hour but the last train from Luxembourg to Brussels leaves around 1910 pm. The journey is around three hours and I could assure you that it is very beautiful all the way.

    On the 'Place du Saint-Esprit'...

by nighthawk Written Sep 12, 2002

On the 'Place du Saint-Esprit' (renovated in the 80's) one can either take an elevator down 80 metres to the lower city or walk down some stairs and streets.
First I went down with the elevator which opened at a cave-like hall. Up I went walking, thus having the opportunity to really see the differences in height.

Except for some pickpockets, you are quite safe in Luxembourg. The murder or rape- rate is very low, streets are safe, even during nighttime (use your common sense...) and you will not be bothered by anyone.

    Very Safe

by antistar Written Dec 19, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luxembourg has to be one of the safest places on the planet, but don't let your guard down too much as even here there is some crime. The dodgiest part of the city seems to be in Gare, especially around the train station. There's a few seedy characters around here, but nothing threatening at all.

    Getting Lost

by antistar Written Dec 19, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Not much you can do about it, but Luxembourg City can be surprisingly confusing with all the ups and downs. Just watch your map carefully, especially in the Ville Basse down below. Try to get an idea of where you are going from above, from the walls of the Ville Haute.

DO NOT MESS WITH THE POLIZI. ...

by BLSM Written Aug 26, 2002

DO NOT MESS WITH THE POLIZI. While we were strollong thru the city, we came up on a crowd. We stopped to see what was going on. It was outside a little pub. They must have call the polizi about a group that were causing trouble. Most of the group got in the polizi van without much encouragement. But one gal who must have been very drunk, was kicking and screaming and calling them a lot of names even I could understand. And I only speak bad german. Any way they were using their night sticks and and anything else the had to subdue her. It took six polizi to pick her up and put her in the van still fighting. I learned then don't get them mad at you.
