Pay a visit to the Luxembourg...

by wayward_son

Pay a visit to the Luxembourg American Cemetery. The cemetery is one of fourteen permanent World War II cemeteries erected on foreign soil. The site was liberated by the US 5th Armored Division on 10 September 1944 and a temporary military burial ground was established on 29 December 1944. Free use as a permanent burial ground was granted by the Grand Ducal government in perpetuity without charge or taxation. The grave area contains the remains of 5,076 American military Dead, including a woman Army Nurse, who lost their lives in the service of their country. The honored Dead came from the 50 states and the District of Columbia. In 22 instances, two brothers rest side-by-side in adjacent graves. One hundred and one headstones mark the graves of 'Unknowns' whose remains could not be positively identified. White marble shafts surmounted by a Star of David mark the graves of 118 of the...

Luxembourg is a Grand-Duchy....

by catnapper

Luxembourg is a Grand-Duchy. Our Grand-Duc is for the moment Jean but in september his son Henri will take his place! Luxembourg belongs with its 2536km2 to the smalles countries in the world./N->S 82km and E-> W 56km) We have here two parts in our country: the south is called Gutland and the north Ösling (part of the Ardennes and the Eifel)Climate:In Luxembourg we have a continental climate. The difference between our coldest month (january with an average temp. of -0,2 C )and the warmest month July (with an average temp. of 17 C) is about 17C. Even if the country is small the climatical difference between Gutland and Ösling is great because of the difference in high of the two parts.

History and...

History and politics:Luxembourg is situated between the Frensh and German culture and was occupied therefor several times in the last five centuries. Germany and France had always opposite interest which lead to several wars and Luxembourg was often involved in their disputes. The years between 963, date when Luxemburg was fonded by Siegfried (and known as Lützelburg) and 1442 were rather calm. The former Earls of Luxembourg, who became Ducs were rather powerfull in the heart of Europe and they tried to make grow their country. Three of them even possessed the crown of the German Empire: Henry VII, Karl IV and his son Wenzel. But in 1443 it was over with the independence and Luxembourg was occupied by the Burgunds under Philipp the Good. 1477 Luxembourg was taken by the Habsbourgs and between 1555 and 1814 it was occupied by the spanish Netherlands, France, Austria and once more by...

Visit to the U.S. National Cemetery where General George Patton is buried with his troups. Looking with pride over the multitudes of Crosses and Star of David's and not seeing one out of alignment no matter where I stood. Absolutely perfect geometrically. Humbled by the knowledge that these young men and women, (over 10,000), gave their ALL for the country we call home.
