HOMELESS

by Aurorae

I've never seen a homeless person in Luxembourg, this is my beloved friend Sylvia (Skipka on VT) who was the reason of my visit to Luxembourg, playing to be a homeless. This is the park at the border with Germany in Echternach, and it was literally empty, there was nobody but us! It has a nice strolling path close to the river and lots of lush green vegetation! It's called a German-Luxembourgish Nature Park.

CAMPING

by Aurorae

Moselle is Luxembourgoise replacement for the sea. Everything happens there. It's the area of tourist focus, and there are lots of campers along the river virtually anywhere! The biggest camping/tourism center is Remich, which reminded me of a mediterranean sea coast town!

National Feierdag

by Skipka

National Feierdag or National Holiday is a great day when you are able to see mass of people around Luxembourg city. This day every Luxembourgish celebrate the birthday of Grandduchess Charlote who actually was born in January 23. National Feierdag is however on June 23. What I heard it is because of weather that people celebrate it that late. In June is better weather for all the proccessions and parades in the street so it has a sense. But it is a bit weird. However, I admit the way how people and the whole country celebrate that. You can see proccesion and later when there gets dark the procession with fire what is really unique and exciting. Late in the night after the fanfare from the Grund there is a great fireworks around that last around 15-20 minutes. After the firework you should go downtown for a dance and drink all night long, such a big celebration at every corner. And why...

The phenomenon : *Clean*

by dr.firas

This ideal clean streets and parks, and everywhere you go, is the tipical thing of Luxembourg city, I've seen few places such as clean as this city, the reason is that people are so civilized and they love their town and keep it clean :-)

buy your snacks where the Royals buy theirs.

by morgane1692

Trekking around Luxembourg's winding and hilly cobblestones makes you thirsty. If you need to buy a bottle of water enroute then, make sure it's at one of these regally sanctioned snackshops. I mean, there are photos of the Grand Duke and his kids in the window. You might bump into one of them your own self, who knows? It's a small town, remember.

Such intense splashes of color

by morgane1692

The weekly Saturday morning market along Pl. Guillaume II went on, despite the mid-March damp and chill. But it was a sunny spring day at all the marvelous flower vendor tents. One right after another, every hue and shade of the rainbow. And beyond. You want to take them all with you. There just isn't that much room in your car. So you snap away. This way anyway, the beauty lingers.

What a kind and gracious country?!

by morgane1692

It's a crappy photo, but if you click it and enlarge the image, you should see the little blue "female" signs here in the parking garage. The parking spaces closest to the exit here are for WOMEN ONLY, can you imagine? Not disabled women, not even pregnant women, just WOMEN. Too bad they were all occupied. Grrrr. So we still ended up on the third underground level, even if we did officially qualify for one of those sacred spots. Wow.

What is Letzebourgish?

by datapanik

The official language of Luxembourg is French which is spoken everywhere, German is also widely used. English is quite common in the capital. There is also Letzebourgish, a dialect of German with a smattering of French which has now been recognised as a language in its own right. This has its origins in the World War 2 period of Nazi rule when the people of Luxembourg refused to sign declarations that they were German and that German was their mother tongue. Instead, they said their mother tongue was Letzebourgish. I didnýt actually encounter anyone using this dialect but if you want to impress one of the locals you could try one of the following phrases (written phonetically):Moyen - Hello, good morningAddy/Eddy - goodbyeMerci - thank youEng, svee, dree - 1,2,3

'Lëtzebuergesch'

by Bjorgvin

The people of Luxembourg speak many languages. German, French and English they speak fluently, but on all levels of society, only one language is used in oral communication: Lëtzebuergesch. This is the everyday spoken language of the people, and the symbol of national identity. 'Lëtzebuergesch' is of Germanic origin (c. 4th century), but is no longer to be easily understood by many a German.
