Language

by joemacaluso

Most people know some english, but the language here is strange. You hear something that remotly sounds like French then you hear German thrown in. I would say it is best to address the people in French. All in all the country is a little weird. The people are really German, but want to be French for some unknown reason.

Small but proud Grand-Ducy

by Pavlik_NL

When The Netherlands in past times did not have a male heir to the thrown, Luxembourg got into a conflict as the local law demanded a male ruler. Since then Luxembourg disconnected in this from The Netherlands under a Grand-Duke. Still the ties between the countries are strong. One can see it in the flag, that are the same except for the colour of blue, that is little lighter then the Dutch one (blue from the sky, in stead of from the sea). In Vianden is a majestic borough on top of a hill in the centre of the village, which used to be property of the Oranges of The Netherlands (royal family) and the familybound of the Grand-Duke with the Dutch royalties are still the closest between two seperate countries.

almost like in France since they speak French too. But even you totally do not speak French, in some shops, they still speak some English :)as long as you are nice to everyone, that would not be any problems :)

If you want to go out and see things happening, then it has to be Wednesday. This is the day that people in Luxembourg have night life. Also try Friday and Saturday. All the other days Luxembourg seems an abandoned city.Sunday evening people use to go to the cinema. If you don't meet anyone in the streets, probably they are watching a film!

D'Letzebuerger SproochThe official language in Luxembourg is French. Yet everyone in Luxembourg speaks Letzebuergesch, sometimes German, more often French. It all depends where you are in Luxembourg.Fortunately mother nature spoke to us in a more understandable manner. The more south you get, the more often you need to know and understand some French.

The people of Luxembourg are an unusual combination of friendly and stuffy. Meet them in the bars or restaurants and they are as nice and pleasent as you could hope for. Ask them for directions while you are walking on the street and they will look at you as if you just slapped them in the face. (A wierd exception to this is the soldiers who guard the Grand Ducal Palace, who although standing to attention, will reassure you with a slight nod of the head that it is all right to take pictures and when not standing to attention will even chat with you.) The best bet is to go into a store or shop to ask for assistance. Generally speaking, it is good to remember that Luxembourgers are a bit more conservative and proudly middle class (in a European sort of way) than their Dutch and Belgian bretheren.

I was surprised by some of the people I met while visiting Luxembourg. Although most were reserved but friendly, many were...perplexed by our being there. It was almost as if they were wondering why we'd choose Luxembourg, of all places, to visit as a tourist. Hopefully that was a one-time experience. I look forward to our next, more in-depth, visit.
