Luxembourg City, the capital and largest city, is divided between an upper and lower town, connected by road and an elevator for pedestrians. Most folks only visit the upper town where the Grand Ducal Palace, the three town squares, the First and Secod World War memorials, and the National Cathedral are located. However, the lower part, called the 'Grund,' is worth a visit. Besides offering a beautiful riverside park and great views of the city walls, the Grund is made up of what were once modest worker's homes but have now been converted into excellent restaurants, bars, and even a few 'country' boutiques. In the north of the country, the town of Vianden has one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. For a small price, you can take a self guided tour of the castle, as well as get some spectacular views out across to the German border. The town below is also very quaint - though quite quiet - with some pretty good places to eat. Luxembourg City is divided into an upper and lower town connected by an elevator. The Grund - lower town - is an overlooked gem. (You can also enter the Grund by road.) Leave a Comment

The walls of the Beck Bastion were constructed by the Spanish rulers of Luxembourg in mid 1600s. The French then conquered in the late 1600s and strengthened the Bastion walls to the height they are today. The fortified walls are situated on the Place de Constitution the views from here over the Petrusse Valley are excellent. The spires you can see in the distance of the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg, although the church was built in 1621, it was not upgraded to a cathedral until 1815, nearly 200 years after completion. Clervaux is situated in a deep and narrow valley beside the river Clerve in the midst of the Ardennes. The Castle in Clervaux was built in the 12th century, but enlarged and fortified considerably in the 15th century. During the Ardennes Offensive in WWII (the Battle of the Bulge, Dec. 1944), a fire damaged the castle, which was completely restored afterwards. Now it houses the offices of Clervaux village, the interesting museum of models of Luxembourg castles, and a museum about the Battle of the Bulge. The Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maur, built in 1910, dominates the valley.

Rent a bike to discover Luxemburg. There are not many special cyclepaths. But there are enough routes where you aren't confronted with lots of cars. Leave a Comment

Visit the capitol, Luxembourg City. This is truely one of the most exceptional capitols and towns in the world. Fought for by all surrounding countries, the old towncentre became one big fortress, yet ... not visible as all of it is underground (Kazematten). Towns built on either side of a river ... quiet normal. The unique thing however with Luxembourg City is that the river is only a little stream and ... it lays deep down in a precipus or call it even a canyon. Deviding the town in two parts (and in the bottom the old settlement of 'Grund' it is definately worth a visit. See further the page on the town itself. Leave a Comment

... and another view of the city. Doesn't really look like a city scene of a capital city, does it? Picturesque though! :-) Leave a Comment

The "train" will also drive through certain parts of the city and makes stops so that people can go out, enjoy the views and take some pictures. For a better view enlarge the picture! Leave a Comment Address: Luxembourg capital

When visiting Luxembourg, you must go to the area called 'little Switzerland'. It is a wonderful place, ideal for walks. I love to go there when the weather is fine, it is so peaceful. There are many places where you can go that are in this aera, for example: Beaufort's Castle, Echternach... Leave a Comment
