ESCH-sur-SURE

by mtncorg

One of the most picturesque villages in Luxembourg. First appearing in history books in 774, by 927 the castle and town had about as many people as live here today - 146. The castle dates back to the 10th century with 13th and 15th century modifications. Time has brought disrepair and ruin, though. It belongs to the state today. There are many nice walking paths in the surrounding forested hills. 1.2 km upriver is the Sure dam which holds back a 20 km long reservoir - both a popular holiday resort and an important source of drinking water.

CLERVAUX

by mtncorg

In the northernmost area of Luxembourg, is the small town of Clervaux. Located on a horsehoe bend of the little Clerve River. A castle dating back to the 12th century and the beautiful Loretto Chapel - 1762 - dominate the small town. High on a hill norhtwest of the town is the tower of the Benedictine Abbey of St Maurice. Along the river is a memorial to American soldiers who fought in the Bulge.

BATTLE OF THE BULGE

by mtncorg

In December of 1944, Hilter launched his western armies in a last desperate thrust against American troops in the snowy forests of the Ardennes. After initial successes, the Nazi divisions were crushed and Hitler's last gamble had failed sealing his defeat in the West. 450000 American troops - 16 divisions - took part in the battle. Almost 48000 were killed or wounded. The battlefields covered most of northern Luxembourg and eastern Belgium. Memorials can be found in both countries - the most impressive, probably being the Mardasson, just outside of Bastogne - in Belgium, but a mere 10 km from the borders of the Duchy. Battle memorials and museums in Luxembourg can be found in Ettelbruck, Wiltz, Clervaux, Luxembourg. Hamm is the site of both American and German military cemetaries. The local population sufferred grieviously from the fighting, too - death, destruction.

GERMAN MILITARY CEMETARY AT HAMM

by mtncorg

Serving as a counterpoint to the American cemetary, the nearby German military cemetary is the final resting place for over 11000 German soldiers - most, also, dying in the winter snowscapes f northern Luxembourg. It is a quiet place. Like many cemetaries the sense of loss and forgotten pervades. So many dead to satisfy the power lust of the Austro-German devil incarnate.

HAMM

by mtncorg

The Treaty of London - 1867 - declared Luxembourg to be a neutral country. All of the Great European powers signed on as gurantors. Like similar treaties guaranteeing Belgian sovereignity, this treaty became but another 'scrap of paper' before the German invasions of WWI and WWII. Some of the major episodes of the climactic Battle of the Bulge occured in northern Luxembourg, where the US Third Army crushingly beat back the Nazi winter attack of late 1944, sealing the German defeat in the West. There are several memorials to be found throughout Luxembourg. 5 km east of Luxembourg city is the American military cemetary at Hamm. Here, over 5000 American soldiers are buried, the most famous of whom is the former Third Army commander himself, General George S. Patton. Patton's grave is front and center of the many soldiers he commanded. He is reviewing his men once more, this time for time...

VIADUCT - PASSERELLE

by mtncorg

Built above the Petrusse Valley in 1859-1861, the Passerrelle ('Footbridge') is the first bridge built of several magnificent bridges built in the City of Luxembourg. Several others can be found in and about Luxembourg. The bridge links the city center on the north via Roosevelt Avenue to the the train station to the south.

GIBRALTAR OF THE NORTH

by mtncorg

The city has long been the site of fortress walls going back to Roman times. In 963, the little fortress was the capital of the County of Luxembourg by Count Sigfrid. The walls were expanded in the 11th into the 14th century - the heyday of the House of Luxembourg. Foreign invasions, starting with the French capture of the fortress in 1443, brought about 400 years of foreign rule during which time the fortress was certainly stout, but not unconquerable, changing hands several times. In 1685, the great French military engineer, Vauban, replaced the old fortress with a new design, supposedly making the fort impregnable. The Treaty of Utrecht -1713 -gave the fort back to the Habsburgs, who busily added additional fortifications, but the fortress fell to French Revolutionary armies in 1795, after a 7 month siege. They left again, with the defeat of Napoleon, in 1814, whereafter, first,...

LUXEMBOURG - Ville

by mtncorg

Luxembourg is a super prototype of a tourist's typical European city: dramatic setting, ancient fortress walls, royal palace, grand main square, magnificent cathedral, well-preserved medieval quarter, and the bauhasian European Community Quarters conveniently stuck north of the main city so as not to detract from the flavor. The historical heart of the city is easy enough to wander about on foot. The views across the Petrusse or Alzette canyons to the cliffs, buildings and spires, show the timelessness of the little capital.

check the city by foot

If you ever in Luxembourg city, the best way to see the highlights of the city is to go the tourist center located near the McD's in the city center. They offer a walking trip of the city where the tour guide to different points in the city like the catacombs, the church and some of the museum around the area. It's a good way to enjoy the city.

The Cathedrale de Notre-Dame

by Paul2001

Luxembourg City's Cathedrale de Notre-Dame is the one religious building in Luxembourg that you should include as a must-see when you visit this tiny country. It is a somewhat austere building that is very impressive in its size and grandeur. Underneath is a vast vault or crypt containing members of the royal family from days past and the tomb of John the Blind.
