Larochette

by MATIM

Larochette the small town on the banks of the “white Ernz” has been a well known holiday resort and one of the most popular excursion centres for about a century. The ruins of larochette castle are witness of the existence of a huge 11th century fortress. The so-called “créhange house” has recently been completely restored.Vast forests, strange riven rocks, sunny slopes and shady valleys represent interesting and quite charming hiking grounds.

Vianden

by MATIM

Vianden Castle was constructed between the 11th centuries on the foundations of a Roman fort and a Carolingian refuge. Bearing the crest of the Hohenstaufen family, it is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. Until the beginning of the 25th century it was the seat of the influential counts of Vianden who could boast of their close connections to the German imperial court. The greatest of the, Henri 1st (1220-1250) was even married to a member of the Capetian family, which ruled France at the time. In 1417, the castle and its lands were inherited by the younger line of the German House of Nassau, which also inherited in 1530 the French Principality of Orange. In 1820, under the reign of King William 1st of Orange- Nassau, count of Vianden, the castle was sold piece by piece and as a result it fell into a state of ruin. In...

Visit the capitol, Luxembourg city

by Pavlik_NL

Visit the capitol, Luxembourg City. This is truely one of the most exceptional capitols and towns in the world. Fought for by all surrounding countries, the old towncentre became one big fortress, yet ... not visible as all of it is underground (Kazematten).Towns built on either side of a river ... quiet normal. The unique thing however with Luxembourg City is that the river is only a little stream and ... it lays deep down in a precipus or call it even a canyon. Deviding the town in two parts (and in the bottom the old settlement of 'Grund' it is definately worth a visit. See further the page on the town itself.

The Old City

by KennetRose

The Old City really is a magical place, straight out of childhood fairy stories. I was there on Sunday evening and much of it was closed, but it was so peaceful strolling amongst the narrow streets of honey-coloured buidings and the tree-lined central square. The whole area is dominated by vistas of the twin spires of the cathedral.

by gnt70

The village of Vianden is probably the best site in Luxembourg to visit. The place is too touristic in the summer but it doesn't matter - you can make some nice photos and then go home. You can visit the castle - in my opinion it's better to make photos with it from outside - heavily reconstructed I'm not sure if it was like that in the past. There is a great swimming pool close there for the hot summer days.Use the teleferic to go from the village to a cafe over the castle offering the best view of the area.

by nighthawk

Visit some (or all) of the many castles. They are representative of the old times, when Luxembourg was a country many leaders desired, as well as political as clergical, for its strategic position and because of the richness of its soil.Get the feeling of back then, when counts and dukes walked in its walls, overlooking the 'little' people.

by Cszar

Sightseeing: Luxembourg was built as a fortress - a lot of the old buildings are still standing.Best feature: a system of tunnels built into a 'rock'. Since the tunnels are very narrow it makes for an interesting 'adventure'. Nice place in summer when its hot outside - go in and cool down!

Luxembourg City, the capital...

by James63

Luxembourg City, the capital and largest city, is divided between an upper and lower town, connected by road and an elevator for pedestrians. Most folks only visit the upper town where the Grand Ducal Palace, the three town squares, the First and Secod World War memorials, and the National Cathedral are located. However, the lower part, called the 'Grund,' is worth a visit. Besides offering a beautiful riverside park and great views of the city walls, the Grund is made up of what were once modest worker's homes but have now been converted into excellent restaurants, bars, and even a few 'country' boutiques. In the north of the country, the town of Vianden has one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. For a small price, you can take a self guided tour of the castle, as well as get some spectacular views out across to the German border. The town below is also very quaint - though quite...
