Grand Ducal Guard

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The Corps of Gendarmes (State police) and Volunteers (Le Corps des Gendarmes et Volontaires) was created in 1881 and constituted the first purely national Armed Force in Luxembourg. As Luxembourg was neutral during the pre-mentioned time period, the corps was more a type of national military school system, preparing and providing access to civil servant- and law enforcement careers. It also had a representational role in addition to guarding the Grand-Ducal Palace and providing military ceremonial support.

Place Guillaume II, Luxembourg

by hopang

Place Guillaume II is located west of Krautmaart in the heart of the city of Luxembourg. It is also known as Knuedler. The equestrian statue of Grand Duke William II was erected in the center of the square. The square is one of the popular tourist attractions in the city of Luxembourg. It is also a favourite meeting place for the locals.

Petrusse Valley

by DueSer

This area, viewed from all along Avenue Marie-Therese and Boulevard F.D.R. is beautiful and historical. These stone walls (some natural, some man-made) are what protected this tiny country over the years. Some of the walls are gone now but a lot still remains. The casements, turrets, and secret tunnels are fun to visit but not much to look at really. The true beauty of this area lies in the natural rock formations and the river at the bottom of the valley. There is a monastery down there as well as several other buildings. Nothing's better on a sunny afternoon than strolling along the boulevard enjoying the view - unless it would be making your way down to the bottom of the valley and looking up.

Cathedral Notre Dame

by DueSer

This is a pretty church. The doors, showing the life of Mary, are impressive. Inside, there are a variety of stained glass windows all with different styles. My favorite was this set of windows near the entrance. Very modern, they still seemed to fit into the style of the place. The pillars in the church have a terrific bas-relief pattern on them - some match perfectly with these windows but each set of pillars is different. The church as a whole seems to have a mish-mash of styles but it somehow all works well together. This is an excellent place to get some decent postcards.

It is also his office where he performs his duties as the head of state. Grand Ducal Palace was constructed in 1572. It was designed by Adam Roberti as a town hall. The palace was converted to the Governor's residence in the early 19th century. Grand Ducal Palace can be considered one of the major tourist attractions in the heart of Luxembourg City.
