Castle of Beaufort

by Mahieu

Beaufort Castle was built in the 9th century as a stronghold to defend the large estates of the abbey of Echternach. Around 1150 the little stronghold was rebuilt to a noble castle upon a massive rock. The lord of Beaufort Castle in 1646, Johan Beck, decided that the old castle didn’t fit his noble ambitions so he started building a new Renaissance type castle almost directly next to it. When the new castle was finished, the old one was abandoned and gradually fell into decay. Fortunately the castle was proclaimed a protected monument by the Luxemburg government. If you want to taste a Luxemburger specialty, try the Beaufort liquor, based on black cassis, which you can buy in the castle.

Bourscheid castle

by Mahieu

The ruins of Bourscheid testify of an impressive fortification and are an excellent example of the medieval castle tradition. The first stones of the castle are said to be built around 1000. During centuries there have been a lot of modification. The castle was abandoned after the year 1512 with the death of the last member of the Bourscheid family. From that time onward only bailliffs lived in Bourscheid castle. In 1812 the last owner sold his whole property and in 1972 the State acquired the ruins.Entrance is 3,50€ per adult. You can also rent an audioguide for 2,50€

Vianden

by Mahieu

Vianden is a very picturesque village, dominated by the magnificently restored castle. It is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the romaneque and gotic periods in Europe and was constructed between the 11th-14th century. Until the beginning of the 15th century, it was the seat of the counts of Vianden. The castle is still well preserved and nowadays owned by the State. Entry costs 5,50€ per adult. One you’ve visited the castle you can have a walk on the fortified walls of the village or stroll in the picturesque streets. There are also a number of churches you can visit.Vianden is one of the most touristic spots in Luxemburg, so needless to say that it can get pretty crowded during summer season.

Esch-Sur-Sûre

by Mahieu

This is, untl now, the most beautiful village I visited in Luxemburg. It’s stituated on the river Sûre (hence its name) and has a population of only a few hundred people. You definitely have to visit the remains of its castle, which can be reached by a steep staircase, cut into the rock. The castle has been inhabitated until the 19th century. All that is left now, are basically ruins, but the climb up is definitely worth it for the beautiful view you have on the village. Access is free.A walk on the edges of the river or in the streets of Esch is also highly recommended.

Castle

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Great duchy Luxembourg is the small country in the center of Europe which played hardly probable not a main role in the European policy many times. Many international bank institutes, the organizations and the bank centers are concentrated in Luxembourg. That makes great the international value of this smallest member of the European union.

Fortress

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Luxembourg was a fortress during four hundred years. Therefore each period of sovereignty has left the strengthenings. Especially impress underground catacombs with extent in 21 kilometers. From 1815 till 1867 Luxembourg has been occupied by Prussian garrison. Later the congress in London has made a decision to make in Luxembourg unmilitary zone and to destroy all the strengthenings.

Duke's Palace

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The first dukes of Luxembourg were from Ardenns's home. The branch which has formed as a result of Ermesinda Luxembourg and Valerian Limbourg marriage has then prevailed. There were four governors of Sacred Roman empire from this branch: Henry VII, Charles IV, Venseslas and Sigismund. In 1815 Nassau-Orange the royal house of Netherlands became dukes of Luxembourg. In 1890 the board has passed to Nassau-Willbourg branch - to Adolf I.

I went,by complete chance,...

by larsy

I went,by complete chance, during the New Orleans in Luxembourg festival. Being from Louisiana Myself and with 8 Louisiana students it was surreal to walk into the town square and be serenade by the Luxembougois singing my state song of 'You are my sunshine'. Do to the festival we had symphonies play as we ate throughout the weekend.A must see is the Valley, this picture is the view from above the valley over looking a castle. I cant even describe it. The castment are also great, its an underground city hundreds of years old. Also check out an old church, I walked in to one and heard the choir sing music that was apocalyptic.

VICTOR HUGO'S HOUSE

by Aurorae

Maison Victor Hugo is in the very center of the town of Vianden, just at the beginning of the bridge! Victor Hugo lived in this house and nowadays it's a museum. It has a small library of his works, scenes and documents of his life, an Internet point with Mac computers, etc...I was very surprised to be the ONLY one visiting his house. Nobody seems to care. :-( And it was a Sunday!
