Vianden

by tini58de

Vianden is an extremely picturesque location with an impressive castle and a beautiful little village on both banks of the Our. The castle dates back to the 9th century. It a remarkable medieval buildin, although mostly restored. You can visit the castle at certain times and the tour is well worth it. An outer wall with guard towers encircles Vianden. Major attractions of this small village of less than 1000 inhabitants are the Gothic style Parish church, the former Trinitarian cloister, various museums, and narrow streets with lovely houses to the left and the right. The chairlift climbs to a height of 440 meters, and it is very well worth taking a ride! We went up with the lift, enjoyed the views, walked down to the castle and further down to the village. A wonderful tour, indeed!Another worthwhile walk near Vianden is to the Our dam and the hydro-electric power station SEO.

Luxemburg city

by tini58de

The history of Luxembourg City dates back as far as 963, when Count Siegfried chose this place to build his fortress. Together with the first market near Saint Michael’s Church, it became the origin of the city. At first it was only surrounded by a simple fortification, but in the course of the years a second and third fortification were added on the west side, whereas the rocks of the Pétrusse valley and of the Alzette valley constituted a safe natural defence. All these ramparts and casemattes can still be visited today, as well as the beautiful palaces, churches, city houses and squares of the city, which since 1994 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!Luxembourg also has a different - a modern face: it has lots of international banks and European Government institutions.

Echternach

by tini58de

Echternach is a small town of about 5000 inhabitants close to the German border. The old patrician houses, narrow streets and ancient ramparts create a remarkable medieval atmosphere. The old Benedictine Abbey, founded in the 7th century by St. Willibrord is huge and very impressive. The Basilica is the most important religious building in the country. The town of Echternach is especially well-known for the dancing procession, the only one of its kind in the whole world. It takes place each Whit Tuesday and attracts thousands of pilgrims and interested tourists.

LaRochette

by tompt

LaRochette is a small village with some hotels , restaurants and a ruine. Although it seems nothing it is a place full of tourists. It is very close to the Mullerthal region, and lot of people who like to walk there stay in LaRochette overnight. The ruine is nothing special and only worth visiting if you are staying longer and have plenty of time.

The city

by irinuca

Luxembourg is a city of myriad faces – not only in the figurative sense. The museums teem with the portraits of the renowned personalities determining the history of the millenary fortress, be it the fortress builder Vauban or the Spanish Governor Peter Ernst von Mansfeld. Faces also moulded the cultural scene, if you merely think of the expressive clown or children’s faces of Joseph Kutter, the most well-known painter of the Grand Duchy. Whoever strolls across the Old Town, the Gardens or the modern Kirchberg Plateau, will invariably encounter further faces on bust, sculptures or memorial stones: they remind you of Goethe, the writer, Robert Schuman, the “father of Europe” and the merry musicians of the kermesse pageant “Hämmelsmarsch”.

Beaufort Castle

by freya_heaven

Ruined 12th century Beaufort Castle sits in the ancient town of Beaufort in the pretty Mullerthal region of Luxembourg close to the German boarder. Also known as "Little Swizerland" for its hilly forested areas. It is just another ruined castle really, but a nice place to explore for an hour or so. Unfortunately it was closed when we visited in March, so we could not actually go inside. The surrounding grounds are lovely though. The castle is open daily from April to the end of October, 9 am to 6pm.The website below has much better photos of Beaufort & the surrounding area

The Beck Bastion

by freya_heaven

The walls of the Beck Bastion were constructed by the Spanish rulers of Luxembourg in mid 1600s. The French then conquered in the late 1600s and strengthened the Bastion walls to the height they are today. The fortified walls are situated on the Place de Constitution the views from here over the Petrusse Valley are excellent. The spires you can see in the distance of the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg, although the church was built in 1621, it was not upgraded to a cathedral until 1815, nearly 200 years after completion.

Adolphe Bridge

by freya_heaven

The Adolphe Bridge (also known as the New Bridge) spans for 153 meters over the Petrusse valley. Completed after 15 years of construction in 1904 & is one of the main throughfares in & out of the city. The park 45 meters below is lovely, with footpaths which follow the meandering Petrusse Rover. The bridge was built during the rule of the Grand Duke Adolphe at the time of building this bridge has the largest stone arch in the world.

Luxembourg City

by freya_heaven

Luxembourg City is the capital of The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. A very clean city & seemed to ooze wealth, not suprising as it is one of the financial hotspots of Europe. The City has been the capital for over 100 years and has been ruled and faught over by France, Belgium & the Netherlands, Austria, Spain and Prussia over the centuries finally gaining total independence in 1839. To me it didnt really feel like a capital city, more a provincial city, we mainly stayed in the older areas of Luxembourg city.
