Bourscheid Castle

by freya_heaven

Bourscheid Castle was my favourite place in Luxembourg. This picturesque partly restored castle was built in 1350 got Bertrand de Bourscheid. Taking over 30 year to build plus add on's in the following century. Freya had a great time stumbling around the ruins and we had the place to ourselves. Entrance is only 3 euros and it seems to be open daily

Larochette

by freya_heaven

Larochette is a pleasant little tourist town with a partially restored ruined castle overlooking the town on the banks of the River White Ernz. The nearest building called Crehange House on the cliff has been totally restored to how it would originally have been in the 11th century. A fire in the 1500s destroyed the castle. You can have guided tours of the castle or just wonder about alone. In the summer they have middle age reinactments & camps.

Ardennes

by freya_heaven

Nearly one third of Luxembourg is covered in forest, much of this in the highland area of the Ardennes in the north of the country. This a very beautiful area quite hilly and unspoilt, with plenty of ruins & castles to explore. There is also the popular Upper Sure National Park with a huge dammed lake which is classified as an area of outstanding beauty. Many riverside walks & overland hikes to enjoy plus water sports on the lake.

Esch-sur-Sure

by freya_heaven

Esch-sur-Sure is a pretty little moated village, almost totally surrounded by the hairpin bend of the River Sure. Set within a 100 meter valley surrounded by wooded hills. On top of the village is a ruined medieval castle with origins dating back to the 10th century built to protect the village against invading Hungarians. Wandering around the ruins & the narrow cobbled streets is a wondeful way to spend a few hours. Esch-sur-Sure is one of Luxembourg's most popular tourist attractions and gets packed in the summer.

Vianden Castle

by sim1

The beautiful castle of Vianden, towering high above the village of Vianden. Its view dominating the area; it is impossible to go here without noticing this castle. I have been twice to this castle, the first time was many years ago, but my second visit was very recent : August 2001. This second visit confirmed my opinion of this castle; they have gone to far with the restorations. The feel of being in a castle is disappearing, it is too slick; too many modern displays. But I still enjoyed my visit here thouroughly, although I don't think I will go here another time. I wasn't here alone, but I had very good company with me. And it was such a beautiful summer day. It was nice, stroling for hours through the castle and sitting on the thick castle walls, enjoying the sunshine. You can find more information about this castle on :http://www.castle-vianden.lu/

The history of Vianden Castle

by sim1

History of the castle :Vianden Castle was constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman 'castellum' and a Carolingian refuge. It is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. Until the beginning of the 15th century it was the seat of the influential counts of Vianden. In 1820, under the reign of King William I of Holland, the castle was sold piece by piece, and as a result, it fell into a state of ruin. It was a pile of rubble until the family of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg transferred it to State ownership in 1977. Since restored to its former glory.

The Chapel

by sim1

The photo is of the Chapel at Vianden Castle. The main construction parts of the castle which are preserved today, in particular the chapel and the small and large palaces, originate from the end of the 12th and the first half of the 13th century.

The Cathedral

by Emmjai

An interesting mix of old and new, the cathedral in the heart of Luxembourg feels like a genuine place of worship. Part of it is obviously very old, 400 years or more, and part, including the apse, clearly 20th century, yet the two marry together so well. Well worth a visit.

Saint Michael's Church

by benidormone

The oldest holy building in the city. The first chapel was built here in 987. Todays building dates from 1688 and was restored in the sixries and the eighties of the twentieth century. It combines elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture. .
